Well --- need to find points/condenser or electronic ignition today or tomorrow! None of the FLAPS have them!
Thanks,

Victor, it looks like no one is near enough to give you a hand. Sorry, I can't either. Whenever I go outside of town, I always carry spare points and a condenser. You'll do the same after this.
I hope you find something at a Flaps nearby. You might have to buy a cheap distributor from them and make it home that way.

Tim, for years I've always had a spare dizzy and points in my stash in the car. Guess what?? They're in the '72 and I'm in the '74. I discovered this sad oversite on the side of the road.
Looking at this tonight I found that one of these strange things I've read happening to others happened here. I checked the timing and it was about 10-12* ATDC. The distributor was on tight. I re-timed it tonight and it seemed to be ok but I'm concerned the module is on the way out so AutoZone points go in tomorrow a.m.
The spare dizzy has an accutronix module btw, this one is a no name empi. The '72 has a compufire with a out 30k miles. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

If you have some way of getting around a bit, Autozone's website shows their store at 3900 N Broad street in Philadelphia as having points and condenser in stock for your '74 Super.
Their phone number is (215) 228-0423, open up at 7am tomorrow. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga"

There's a guy about an hour from where I am curt strausser, who has tons of original Bosch points and condensers and I've sent him a couple of emails with my phone number, no reply yet. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Mukluk, thanks for the info. I found points today at an auto zone a couple of towns away and there is an advanced auto about 10 miles from here that has a condenser which I'm picking up in the morning. I'd rather go further to get the real NOS Bosch but these may have to do. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Just a shot in the dark, but there's also this shop from the Samba business listing that might be worth a call:

Made it home w/the FLAPS points/condensor combo. Turns out the hold down screw for the empi knock off had come loose, screwing up the timing. I didn't want to chance it though and went with the points today. I'll be testing the module w/a different distributor this week to see if perhaps it was damaged in the time I ran w/it loose. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

my daughter bought an $85 chinese-made distributor for her '98 Pathfinder, and about 10 months later the set screw holding the distributor rotor came loose, and it stalled in the Arizona desert (freeway) on a Sunday afternoon. She had AAA towing, supplier did honor the 10-year warranty and refunded money after shop made that diagnosis. Of course that rotor screw was never touched during the install, just line up, insert, and adjust timing. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. FWIW in the future, The Bus Depot in Perkiomenville Pa is close to you and has or can get you quality parts that you can pick up there. I have used them almost exclusively for parts and have not been disappointed.

Just realized you are not from Doylestown, but the Bus Depot is a great source for parts here on the East coast.

Gents, thanks for the recommendations. I'm actually from Arlington VA and made it back yesterday using FLAPS points and condenser, no issues. If I can ever convince my wife to take the Bug again the next time we visit our friends in Doylestown, I'll have these various options at the ready! _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Concerning the wife, Victor, I figure if we ever break down while on a trip in the bug, mine will never want to go again. But, knock on wood, we've never had an issue with the bug while on the road together .
It's kind of funny, though, a couple weeks ago, I told her I'd replaced pretty much everything except the alternator, and a few days later, my alternator light started glowing. Okay, so now I have replaced that, as well as some wiring.
This Saturday, we're going to a Show & Shine in McCloud, CA. It's only about one hundred miles away, but there will be some mountain terrain along the way. I just installed the new Bosch alternator, new flywheel seal and clutch driven disc, adjusted valves, reset end play, and tuned everything up, so I'm not expecting any issues. Tomorrow, Napa says they'll have my 10-30 Valvoline Racing oil, so I'll change the oil, too.
The wife will still complain about the noise, but it's not as if I listen to her, anyway (so she says often enough).
