The one shown with a 'class-C' body on a bug chassis is in detail of Dune buggies&HOT VW's, issue48287, jan 1970. I was lucky to find this issue awhile back going thru so old mags, was looking for awhile. A cal co, made up kits or turnkey on your chassis or a drive off one.Saw 1 in Bug a paloosa about 4 yrs ago, fair shape, never could locate owner. Safety issues today might make this a no production item, but the 'home builders' could have a go at. I did a lot of studying of how to do one but life got in the way then. My 2cts. |

I've pulled a small "Mini Canned Ham" I made from scratch since 2007 to most all of the Florida Shows. I get sent this 5th Wheel Video about twice a month now.... is what it has dwindled down to. Neat but I feel a bad design. Dig through my pics to see my trailer..... I have a 1600 SP and my trailer is a LOAD but I drive sensibly and that's the reason I get by with it. Someone better build a big cool running engine or go Subaru Conversion to pull that found trailer. I'm not trying to be a sad face in all of this but there is a reason you don't see them at VW Shows. Even the Eriba Puck is relatively a rare trailer to see even a VW Bus towing it. _________________ ........... _╒═══╕_JimDandy.and.EMPI-Titelock.

Please tell us what your teardrop style trailer weighs!!
I've seen it in person and thought it a good idea. I think it was at the Turkey Run in St. Augustine FL ........where yours was present along with another made entirely of aluminum channel and aluminum skinned, but that one was spartan compared to your trailer! _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

I've never weighed my trailer.... if I had to give an educated guess based on the last one I built that I did weigh..... I'd have to say 800+ loaded. I've been over the Skyway Bridge several years in a row coming from Kips Party heading to Bulli Brigade and on the north side of the Skyway the winds KILLED my speed.... all the way back down to 3rd gear. People Kite Surf out in the bay there. Also after Bulli heading back across the causeway to Tampa again I draft off of other cars as the winds are a pain there too. I have guessed that the video of this Beetle pulling the trailer is just pulling a VERY empty shell. Notice how dark the windows are. I also think the following car is for safety as it took a bit of time to even get that trailer up to speed with even a tail wind. _________________ ........... _╒═══╕_JimDandy.and.EMPI-Titelock.

I found a picture in John Crean's biography of a 5th wheel VW trailer he developed in 1973 called the Dandy. He was the owner of Fleetwood Industries which was the largest maker of RVs in the country, but they never put the Dandy in production. John Crean set a Baja record in a Meyers Manx in 1967 which was what led to the organization of NORRA and the Baja 1000 race

I saw a post on Facebook today and a guy actually found an original one of these trailers. I think it is in Mississippi?

If someone in Tahoe has the rest of this set up I'd love to see it. I can't imagine why they would have this on their car otherwise.
