Someone replaced the little fill plug with a grease fitting.

Weird but I guess as long as they didn't use normal straight front end grease it should be ok.

Last two loads home.

So they added a new floor over the old one at some point. Not great quality work. Smile

Side walls are usable. Gas tank is no good but has a reserve valve that looks usable. Torsion beam is good but frame and horns are gone.

Transmission case is exilent. Reductions are good. I need to make a drum puller. Shifting rod was still good also.

Case looks excellent. No corrosion on the bottom. Turned over easily. That was a surprise. Was setup to put some force on it and it just turned over. Good pressure plate. I need that for my bus. Tins all covered in rust but look usable.

I can spin the distributor shaft so something is up there.

This was a very fun adventure. It was just 7 day ago I found it. Smile

Very exciting when I found bits that were unexpectedly still good. It was quite a bit of work though and a two person job to handle the parts. Used a generator and a grinder to cut it up. Went through 7 cutting disks and that is with most of it falling apart.

Now I just need to get it all stored away.

I am hoping to pick up a late 50s to early 60s repairable panel as a driver and these parts may come in handy. Much of it is not good enough to be worth shipping but good for me to use. I will likely sell some stuff if someone wants it but I'm happy to keep everything.

Now I want to find another. Smile It is probably a good think there are not many around here. Haha.

I'm surprised that engine turns over looking at the outside of it.

Definitely. I am sure the valves are stuck but it turns over nice and smooth.

I kind of want to get it running... I should at least strip the tins off and have a look at the condition of the heads before I put it away. I don't have a use for it but would be fun to rebuild.

Wow, there's a lot of good usable stuff there! Who knows how many other busses will now live thanks to these parts. You might as well get that engine up and running, never hurts to have a spare ready to go sitting in the corner.

Took a closer look at the case. It looks much nicer than I thought. Went to clean the numbers off and found it was a layer of dry oil and not corrosion. No visible pitting anywhere. 0.015" end play so will need some work.

So I will sell it. I wont have a need for it and it seems too nice to just store away. I will strip it down to a long block so I can see the condition of the heads and get the dates.

I'd pull the sump plate off and look at the case opening there. Lots of pictures of terrible corrosion on the case under the sump plates from water sitting in there on other engines that sat for decades like that one.

Nice job scavenging so many usable parts off the corpse. Very Happy

Wasn't going to strip this until winter but couldn't resist.

All looks excellent from what I can see. Lots of cooked on oil around valve covers but it scraped off nicely. No water inside.

I cant decipher the date. 20-2-28 I was reading about this yesterday but cant find it now.

I have no idea what it is worth. The cheapest long block I found was 365...

Tins usable with work but likely not worth shipping.
Generator looks good
Thermostat usable.
Fuel pump looks good
Distributor ruff. likely not worth making look good. Shaft seems good though.

Got everything packed away today so now I can get back to my bus.

That's pretty impressive that the thermostat is still good. Engine case looks good too.

I've seen this many times, and used it. If the seal is too far gone to keep oil in, grease at least doesn't run out so fast.

Man, you would be surprised to see some of the rusted shit I've wrapped in cardboard and shipped anywhere on this continent. However bad that stuff is, somewhere there's a guy fixing a worse bus, and he wants that. You think it can't be so, but its always wanted. Ironically, I have a nice Classic Fab side in the classifieds, but all of the rusty original metal has sold....

Judging by the unmolested condition of the tappet slots and the securing nuts, this area almost appears virgin.
