I did a research study in the Pawnee some years ago - agree it is good for avoiding tourists

go in spring when the mtns are wet slogs; and look around for the "canyons" and other eroded rock areas (but watch out for rattlers)

Pawnee Buttes...My GPS told me to take a road that was literally a wagon trail to nowhere. I had to get out the actual maps and do some research. Very little in the way of gas stations out there as well. But if you're looking for solitude, you can find it there.

On a hill above Canyon Ferry Reservoir south of Helena, MT. We're headed that way later today once wifey gets home from work.

On the way to Fairy Lake outside of Bozeman, MT (I love having such cool camping spots close to home - it makes for short tows Laughing ).

On top of Gooseberry Mesa near Vernal, UT. This was our "big van trip last year". The Westy waited until we were 2 miles from home on the return trip before the tranny blew. I call that a "win".

A cool view of Zion NP from another camping spot on Gooseberry. We were parked pointed into the winds that kicked up and had this to look at while we ate dinner. Friends who have seen the picture have asked if we, "installed a big flatscreen TV in the van?".
