I've been (slowly) tearing down my 1990 2.1 engine and just opened up the oil pump to find this:
Is this normal? I'm assuming no, but don't understand how that would've happened. If not normal, should I replace it? Dased on the chip's location it looks like it shouldn't have much detrimental effect on pumping ability to my untrained eye. |

i don't see any problems.
Please describe the chip that you are referring to. "Chip" can be a lot of things, preferably An edible scoop for homemade pico de gallo. Or a crack in a window. Cowpoop dried hard enough to burn in a fire. And , of course a missing chunk of Aluminum, which I don't see (yet). Maybe clean it up better and take a pic from another angle? _________________

I think he is referring to the figure 8 in the photos. In the middle of the eight on the left side it looks like it's been pressed in. _________________ Brandon

regardless of the 'chip'.... for $65 or less, replace the oil pump. to not do so while right there is false economy.

My eyes are terrible but the lower edge of the pump bore [2nd photo] has a large gouge in it.
As mentioned earlier, I too would replace the pump. It's time for another pump to take on the chores. |

shagginwagon83 is referring to the chip/gouge I was talking about. I think I'll be replacing it, just wanted to be sure I didn't order a new one and find out the chip was by design. |

I would not replace the pump if everything is in spec as replacement pumps are somewhat of a crap shoot. You can easily clean up wear on the cover or replace use the cover. The pump needs to fit tight in the case for it to work well. |

I was referring to the oil relief, so I think I may stick it out with this pump after making sure it's in spec. |
