Hello to everyone and what a great site/souce of wisdom. New to forum and happy to be back in the VW owners circle with the recent acquisition of a 78 Westy "Basic". It's an apparent one owner bus that was sold originally at Kendon VW in Harbor City, CA.

I suspect the original owner and his family had years of enjoyment and I am excited to carry the fun into the future. I look forward to the insights and sarcasm of this community and hope to meet up with like-minded enthusiasts in NL and CO. Homecoming pic below.

Every Type IV engine owner should know this!!!

If you over tighten the Oil Strainer bolt, you will brake the engine case!

There is an oil strainer in there.
TORQUE THE STRAINER BOLT TO NO MORE THAN 9 FT. LBS.

Thanks for the comments. Not sure about 'gold' status, but I'm excited to see it for the first time when I get back to CO next month. Never bought a vehicle without an inspection before, but clearly threw the dice on this one.

BTW, build a shopping list of needs/wants including front seat covers with as close to original material, ditto for front carpet, gas pedal, and swivel for passenger seat.

Any suggestions on sources in US or Europe would be appreciated.
