I am working on restoring a vw bus and am confused about the aircooled system. How effective is the stock cooling system work? Does anyone have any good diagrams to reference? Would anyone recommend an aftermarket solution?
Thanks

It obviously works very well as your vehicle is forty years old and probably hasn't seen much in the way of cooling system maintenance for the last 30-35 years if it ever has had any at all. Ratwell.com is always a good place to get info on these old rigs.

A complete original cooling system works well. Problems start when air seals fail and aren’t replaced or other important parts go missing after all the years. Lots of times aftermarket parts become a bandaid, not a proper repair. For instance, a HD oil pump sounds like a good thing, right? In actuality it can increase the flow to the point where the oil doesn’t have time to transfer the heat and the extra torque for the pump robs engine horsepower. That’s just one example.

there are several different variations on air cooled VW engines, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Best to start by putting the year and engine type in your signature line or posting it in the thread. FWIW while the engines do shed heat, they easily overheat when pushed too hard, and are prone to cracking of the heads from many heat cycles. Some models have oil cooling deficiencies while others have problems losing valve seats. Ignition timing is critical on these old engines. In spite of this we love these old buses and if you added up all the miles driven by air cooled buses it would be in the billions.
