long ago I was taught to hit both sides close to 180 degrees apart as possible on arm, pitman or spindle arm, simultaneously with 2 hammers, to remove rod ends, usually takes 2 or 3 blows to do, the hammer blows shock the arm enough to move things and release the taper, has worked for me many times, little damage to the already "hammer forged" component. Never hit the end of the rod end even with nut installed usually nut will be damaged also. |

Very good technique, mind you, keep the nut on a few turns so you don't mess up the threads when you miss. And, you really only need to hold one hammer against it while hitting it with the other.
