Can anyone pin down a date on this photo? I am curious about the age of that blue and white bus. _________________ nothing |

Don't know if it's a vintage pic or not, but I'm guessing all the vinyl is vintage:

I weighed a box of vinyl records that contained about the same number as found in one of those plastic bins. One box weighed 51 pounds, and I would say there are 30 times that number on the Double Cab -- equaling approximately 1530 pounds which is about 73% of the maximum load of 2094 allowed for a '69 Double Cab. (I don't know which year this DC is.) I see more bins in the back seat but can't tell how many. The roof rack is supporting about 560 pounds. According to the following link -- https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/aug68bus/page51.jpg -- a roof rack mounted to the rain gutters should have a maximum load of 165 pounds.
I wonder how much 1530 extra pounds would affect the 0 to 60 acceleration times and the 60 to 0 braking times. Keep in mind, a '69 DC had a 1584cc engine. |

Here's a much clear/larger version.
The newest car I see in the pic is the '57 Ford, and the text at the bottom says "Sherman Oaks, 1957 ... ".
Date on the magazine, at top right, is Feb. 4, 1990.

I don't remember ever seeing a housing development in SoCal that had a sidewalk on one side of the street but not the other. |

I can't speak to a '69 Double cab but I've had over the max in my old '63 Single Cab and acceleration was slow but didn't seem to be too bad. Stopping was a problem though, I coasted 1/2 way through a stop light while standing on the brakes because I misjudged the increased distance. _________________ How to Post Photos

Is it just me or did they make street look A LOT steeper in that magazine photo?
In case anyone was wondering, all of those houses are around $1.2M |
And, in 1957 they probably cost $15 to 20K when new. Nice appreciation in value I'd say. Imagine the same $15k house sold in Detroit in 1957? It's probably worth $5k today if it wasn't knocked down when it was abandoned. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I realize you are probably guessing but I was curious:
Was $15K expensive in 1957?
Google says, for 1957:
Average Cost of new house $12,220.00
So probably a nice house if it cost ~25% more. Or way more if it was $20K. _________________ How to Post Photos

I thought I was in the ball park based on what my childhood home cost when new in 1958. It was in the San Diego area. It was a smaller square foot starter home though it was on a bigger lot. It sold new for $12k.
What is even more interesting is that the average annual American income in 1958 was $3673. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
