It reads: "Long Island RR #1035 Gandy Wagon. Glen Head, Long Island, NY. July 25th, 1960 (during strike)".

Think this is another picture of the bus above. The picture was for sale on Ebay in October 2015 I thought the words on the side said 'Candy Wagon' Laughing

Check out how the dogleg appears to enlargen outward to match the track width.

certainly looks like it had some work done up front, even has pushbutton doorhandles.

Looks like it could have had semaphores, looks wavy there.

Wonder what drive it has since both front and rear are hung on leaf springs. No panto-graph to access the overhead wire. Twitchin'!

Does not seem to have a steering wheel, so I'm guessing it's a "permanent" railway bus. Confused

I wonder how many of the last few posts are the same bus over the years. It (or one of them) had a face transplant at some point.

If they are all the same bus, the transplant must have happened in the late 60s or early 70s, judging by the car in the background of this...

I thought it was an '80s Ford Cortina at first, but it looks too rounded. I'm guessing it's some sort of early '70s Opel.

If that's the case and this is all one bus, it looks like they replaced the front end after VW stopped building splitties, which hints at the likely replacement cost of the bus to the railway operator (they were prepared to repair it with scrapyard parts after the above, rather than bear the cost of an upgrade to a Bay-derived replacement).

Those Rail Busses are so nifty-pifty; my next toy train layout would love to be just those. The zeroed headlights are surreal.

Is there already an existing model RR toy version of one of these RR Buses out on the market?

Brekina has everything. Seen and bought various models of Brekina toy VWs, while living in Germany, never saw this RR version. Very cool.
