We have here a bit of a mystery camper. We pulled this out of a barn this past weekend.
It's in a 1966 walk thru bus. It has similar components to what an SO 42 interior would have in terms of the pieces. The bed is just three pieces of heavy wood tied together with wide piano hinges. There is a spice rack on the rear cargo door, and a fold out table on the front door and on the cabinet behind the front passenger seat.
The curtains are suspended on long springs with little clips top and bottom.
There is a wardrobe closet, a rear compartment behind that, a headbanger shelf, and a cabinet space under where the reat seat would be. All the cabinet handles are the same.
The Dining table is hinged to the side wall and uses a leg that is screwed into a heavy metal base underneath.
The headliner is quite nice and made with a 1/8" veneer plywood.
Although this is an original pearl white bus, the interior behind the front seats is painted black on the walls.
There are small details that make me question if it is a homemade job or one of the many aftermarket kits.
Has anyone seen an interior like this? |

The full interior will have to come out to repair damage from the bus flopping on it's right side at one time years ago. Maybe we'll learn more then.
Don't know if it's going back in tho. |

I've seen those same exact curtain springs and spring holders on various buses. I think they were widely available at hardware stores back in the day.
I can't identify the kit, sorry. |

what does the door look like on the side of the closet/cabinet? Is it a slider instead of a hinged door? |

What's in there now is a pair of cargo doors. However, This bus was on its right side at some point and at least the rear quarter from the cargo opening back to the corner has been replaced with that from a panel bus.
The cargo floor looks original and has the plate for the door stakes to go into so I'm pretty sure it has always been a plain old Kombi with cargo doors. |

If the back cabinet by the bed (by the rear hatch) on the passenger side is a slider, it’s a Montgomery Ward most likely. It’s the only picture not included.
They did the paneling real similar to that with the faux layered sheet wood (though the trim/layout varied a bunch, so this isn’t a for sure). They also have about 50,576 screws holding on the paneling on each section. The bed should also be a wacky piano hinge fold out deal. The hardware for the bed likely doesn’t match with the piano hinge being brass looking and the other (hidden) bed hardware zinc coated.
Doesn’t the fridge have any markings? Have you looked close for any old rivets/stickers that were removed?

I have the same style of springs for the curtains in my bus. Mine is a EZ camper. _________________ It's always Quattro season!

So, back to this bus. We've taken a long hiatus from our VW fun to build a house but I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and am back doing research to try and figure it out.

No, the wood "cabinet" does not have a sliding door.

Yep, it's a slider. Dunno about the Montgomery wards package. Noticeably missing is any wood paneling or those scallops around/above the windows (No screw holes either) and just regular popout windows.

The area behind the right side seat where an icebox should be is just a regular wood cabinet with a door and shelves below and a drawer above.
The linoleum is really similar looking to what I've seen in some of the Montgomery wards kits as well.
