Try Hagerty Insurance, they have some great rates.

I have several vehicles with Hagerty - a great company but very unlikely they would offer coverage on a Vanagon.

It doesn't hurt to ask here but there are so many variables (in particular geographic location and driving record) that affect rates so any comparison of personal results is almost meaningless.

You will want to understand the difference between 'stated value' and 'agreed value' policies -- both serve a purpose but you need to know which you are seeking and what they entail.

Since it is off the road for a spell you may only need comprehensive coverage though your state may also require some level of liability coverage for registration.

A competent insurance agent can be a good source for understanding your options.

Ours is listed as a third vehicle with low yearly mileage. Pretty low cost as part of the policy.
I am of the opinion that it really won't matter much whom you choose.
I , however, prefer an agent that uses a brick-n-mortar store for ease of all things and justify the cost because of that.
YMMV

If you just need the insurance for tags, anyone cheap will do. You're not likely to be making any claims if you're not driving it, right?

I gained insight from this GoWesty article on insurance when we picked our Westfalia.

http://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=35

I knew from reading these forums that collecting your actual costs back were slim to none, but you could at least get a good distance towards reimbursement if time was put into searching for a receptive agent when policy hunting. I’ve kept track of all our costs after purchase and have kept the agent updated - how it will actually work if we get creamed I have know idea (and hope to not find out!) but at least there is a paper trail. If your having substantial restoration done you’ll want to discuss how far those costs would be covered. We’re with Allstate as I like our local agents here in SE Alaska.

All that said - best insurance is keeping it in good running condition (no fires), alert driving (avoid crappy conditions) and install tracking device (theft recovery). Or don’t drive it Smile

I got RV insurance thru State Farm, which works if you have a Westy and don’t put a lot of mileage on it. Crazy cheap.

Me too...

Unlimited annual mileage
Ability to camp in it
Agreed Value Policy

$62 a month....

You may not want "cheap" insurance since when/if the time comes you need to make a claim you might be disappointed...

Progressive seems pretty reasonable. They treat it as an RV. Don’t have any other vehicles on the policy’s and its around 35 month. I drive it almost every day.

Go to the state ins. commission website and see if they list the claims performance of insurance co.s. If they don't ask for it.

That will give you the best Ins. CO.s (USAA - if you qualify, and Amica).

The worst Ins. Co.s will also be on the list - the ones with lots of complaints. State Farm will be on that list.

Ignore comments based on anecdotes and use the statistical data compiled by your state (or other states, if yours doesn't keep track - or if the ins. lobby has greased them up enough to keep the data hidden).

The cheapest may not give you any coverage by lying & denying your valid claims (State Farm). Allstate is pretty bad too IIRC.

You will need a good driving record to get the best, and will be rel. cheap too...

I heard progressive would insure the van as an RV agreed value in NJ so I just called them and they wouldn't give me RV insurance because it didn't have a permanent bathroom in it. So annoying.

Could vary by state... could be the agent made a mistake.

I doubt that it was an underwriter feeling generous (they don't, ever).

It is interesting to hear what others have & pay but insurance is so specific to geography, state mandates, your driving record, your credit rating, your zip code, your age, coverage selected, other policies with the same carrier, etc. that comparisons don't tell you much -- you just have to shop around.

I just reviewed the CA Insurance Commissioner website for rankings and State Farm Is pretty bad! Looking into GEICO, which, despite their dumb ads, ranks pretty high.
