Looking to buy a new roof rack for my 66 Bug. Many vendors offer "stainless steel" with wood slats, but prices vary widely - $180-$449 for what appears to be the same thing.
Is there a recommended vendor or source for these? Are there multiple manufacturers and/or quality levels where one unit is worth the extra money? Is there a preference between silver powder coat, "stainless steel" or chrome?
Thanks in advance! |

In '66 you had one choice from VW- all metal. Many folks will agree here that nothing beats finding an original rack. Those same people likely agree that back-dating a '66 with a wood slat rack looks silly. If it is less than perfect- get it powder coated silver. Factory rack- $125, powder coating- +/- $75.
There is no similarity between an EMPI screw-together (that's why they are shippable and dirt cheap) and the stainless thing in the $450 range- quality is DIRECTLY relative to price when you go from crap to nice to nicer. If you think they are the same you are not looking hard enough. There are always a ton of racks for sale in the classified- search "rack." Simply put, no excuses at all why you can't find one new or used here.
One final thought- shopping from a vendor means your cheap rack just got marked up more. Buy from the person who MADE the rack if you must have new. _________________
