I got the undercarriage painted. I ended up adding a little more red to the front wheel wells after I took these pics...

Dave,

I've been loosely following this build and it looks great.

Are you restoring it to the truest sense? Like leaving over spray under and what not? I ask as it looks like it - and love it when people shoot for "as factory done".

Lovely! looks like this bus could have left the factory exactly that way. Very well possible. Great choice to vote against the all common resto rule and go for what the bus was really delivered!

Yes, trying to match the original colors and overspray as it would have been done originally. I know the overspray varied widely but hopefully it's close. Once you get into the '60s there seemed to be more body color underneath and I understand if someone doesn't like the overspray look and prefers to paint the entire underneath body color. It wouldn't have seemed right on this bus though.

Thanks again guys!

Thanks! Yeah, I had to use body filler. While the original belly pans were solid they were pretty beat up. I pushed down what I could from the topside while the floor was out, but I was working around the heater tube, cable tubes, etc. Once on its side I used the nail puller to pull and had to do a bit of shrinking. I got it straightened out but needed filler to smooth out all the metal work. It was fairly time consuming but I'm glad we saved the pans with the original spot welds and gas welds in tact. The lower transmission tube was beat up too and took some time to straighten out.

Did you literally straighten out the transmission cradle or is this an early bus/1952 thing ? yes the cradle almost always has dings and dents from using jacks but all of my 4 53 and 54s had a bow shape to them, none as straight as yours looks now.
here's my 53 SC for comparison

The body is down off the rotisserie...

Starting body work on the front doors. They were clean enough I was able to metal prep and go over the old media stripping. Note the last three digits of the VIN on the doors and window frames...

Looks incredible! Cool

What’s the plan with the splash pan. I was thinking about this today as mines ready for paint to. What colour are they on a 52 deluxe? They are black on microbuses.

I just sanded it by hand and primed it as best I could. It's a pain, but you can in there.

Thanks. Good question on the pedal pan as I've been wondering the same thing... The one I have here is grey but not sure it's original to the car. I thought most I've seen are grey, but you've seen black? The heater baffles are black. So I like the idea of black.

I don't see why they would do different on deluxes on a part which is basically not visible... so I will go for black on mine too.

Also I think those black parts on deluxes are great because unexpected. Even the wiper arms, bases and blades were originally black on my 52. Idea

I've been working on the bus, but nothing really exciting in photos... A lot of block sanding and re-priming. Here's the cargo doors and decklid back from the stripper and in primer...
