1981 bell housing to engine mounting

Putting my power train back together. Engine to tranny going together and the way it came apart had 2 studs from engine case on bottom through trans case, a nut and bolt by the clutch slave bracket through engine case and tranny case but a d shaped headed bolt in the bellhousing through The trans case ear to mount starter but it does not go through the engine case..... there is a hole in the engine case that lines up with the hole in trans case but this special bolt is there
3 bolts hold engine and trans.
Cases together? Would it be better to get a longer bolt to go through both cases and through starter mounting pulling them all together or did the Germans have it right?

The top starter bolt goes through the starter the bell housing and the top passenger side engine hole and a nut clamps all three together the Vanagons typically had a long hex bolt but the other VW's used the D shaped bolt with a nut that could be tightened from the engine side.

Pull the starter back out and then start the bolt through the hole in the starter and then slip the starter and bolt up into position.
