It looks to be a cotton fiber pad which would have been typical in that era and would have been placed on top of the foam.

The foam is interesting because I can't tell if it is latex foam or polyurethane foam.

This is an interesting time because commercialized poly just came out in 1954. From that time on there was supposedly a big push to unseat the latex process because of the toxicity, manpower and cost that went into the process. Latex was also going through some very volatile pricing during the 50's so I am sure they used whatever was cheaper at the time, even if it was unproven technology.
