After a nice long 15k mile rod knock, I got a used motor to slap in this weekend. If all goes well, I'll have it at the maupin oregon campout this next weekend! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Thanks!!
Wish list, comments welcome!
85 Westy springs to lift the front and rear back up! (100$ locally)
New front and rear stock bumpers with caps found for 125$ a pair local (want heavy duty bumpers but gonna start with straight ones)
Truck mirrors as seen on ol blue
Front LED foglights that sit by the turn signals. Anyone got a link or source for those?
These: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6422294#6422294
Tinted windows. Drive blue for a weekend and totally loved the dark windows. Gonna see if I pull all my glass if I can get them all done cheaper or not. Going pretty dark.
Rain guards like blue
Likely a set of 27" general grabbers when these tires finally go..

Hey - I recognize that engine!
Hope it works for you Stu (didn't realize you were the Stuart I sold the engine to)! The wife and I are both glad it's going to a good home. Will be watching this post with interest... _________________ '82 Westy w/2012 Subaru EJ25 (AKA "Dave"). |

Yep! That's me! thanks again!
My old engine pulled a stunt with one of the 12pt bolts...off to the bus I in high hopes for a new one so I can drill it out. Totally jammed up. Impact, breaker, torch...nothing. One bolt!!!

Great thread, great story and great work. I will definitely be following this thread. Congratulations on a great find. I love hearing stories of neglected Vw's being gifted to people capable of restoring them to their original beauty and function. Nice job! Keep up the great work and glad to see you getting so much enjoyment out of he van.

Got it in, drove it home!
Got a list of things to clean up, adjust, and reseal...but it's driving so now the easy stuff can be fine tuned while in the car, and I'll have it ready this weekend for the campout at maupin! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

So....after installing the new motor, found one of the heads (#2 exhaust) valve was pulled so far through the head I couldn't adjust the valve out far enough to even drive it...so I parked it and continued debating my options...tdi, or air cooled.
Well, tdi is still on the list, but then this 500$ rebuilt motor landed in my lap.
So I went and pulled it out of its van today, where I also noted a few other needed parts...might go back for more...
Until I get a free weekend, here the van sits, next to what's left of Maisy, who arrived back at home last night...
PS, no hard feelings torbot, about the motor I just put in, it was as-is, no biggie _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Stu...how does the engine cover fit with the closet overhanging the hole somewhat, on the left side? Never noticed that before.
Make sure you retorque those CVs, too. _________________ .ssS! |

Never took the CV bolts off
And it’s got enough room to tilt up, then it slides out the back of over to the passenger side just fine. Westfalia made it fit quite nicely. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
