I ran a 2003 weekender/westy for more than a decade, my (now x-)wife took it in the settlement... OK, so now I've got a Vanagon, but still look at EV's with some interest. This one obviously needs a tranny, but at just over 5k, it caught my eye. Would be nice some day to get another EV and sort the tranny, etc.
Hope someone takes this to a nice home.

Maybe a good bunch of bits on this beast. Someone would be glad to have an engine for this price, I'd think:

This isn't a whine, more like an OMG. Last June my wife was scrolling through "FREE ITEMS" on Craigslist and said wow, look at this. 2001 VW Eurovan FREE. I said, send an Email NOW!! He responded in a few minutes and gave us the address which was about 15 minutes from where we live! Jumped in the Cabrio, top down and off we went. Along the way she asked for a picture, he immediately responded with 2 . It is Techno Blue....my favorite EV color! He told us it isn't running but just needs a fuel pump and a muffler! Picked it a few days later, it had 160k miles and it came with good title!. Installed new fuel pump, started right up and ran great but a bit loud. Replaced rear muffler and was now quiet .Registered and insured it, replaced worn lower balljoints, all rotors and pads and had transmission serviced as well as had the timing chains listened to by a local German car mechanic with a lot of EV experience. He said the chains sound just like his 2000 EV and it has been like that for years, don't worry about it until you start getting cam codes. It runs and drives great, but it is a GLS model, so since I didn't have much into it, I decided to convert it to a MV weekender. Pictures pending. |

I've seen these racks around, what's the main rationale for going with a rack like this over, say, a hitch-based system? Doesnt effect bottom clearance? Potentially cheaper than buying a $150 hitch + $300-800 thule/kuat/yakima hitch rack?
Are you theoretically able to open the rear door with a bike attached?! |

^^ Yeah - I think that's the deal. The rack goes with the hatch/rear door...
We have a hitch system on ours which is great really - we can share the same rack with multiple vehicles... but to open the rear door you have to fold down the hitch rack. It is a little tough to do loaded with bikes, and wide handlebars in our case make it difficult to actually open the rear door. Not that I intend to swap or anything at this point.
The other factor is just having the rack there with no bikes on it. So if I have the rear door open, the rack is kind of in the way and I have to step through it, (read as trip on it) when accessing the back of the van...again...not that it is a huge deal or anything... _________________ 1993 Weekender - Hula

I used to have a tilt down hitch rack. I didn't like the way the bikes just hung and it stuck out too far. The main reason I went with a Fiamma hatch rack was to have access to the hitch since I tow a small trailer sometimes. The bikes also sit higher and don't block the rear license plate. I am very happy I switched from the hitch to the hatch. _________________ '03 MV |

This is more humorous than a whine:

I've got to say that this is straight up unicorny stuff right here. A LWB double slider Syncro TDI poptop with nothing but passenger seating...wtf?
I can't tell if these pics are intended to be ironic or erotic, but they're certainly an odd addition.

I guess they added the poptop but not the bed up top, given he's sleeping on the floor? That van is inadmissible into the US for another 6 years. |

Has anyone here ever dealt with this vendor? They have lots of unique T4 stuff, but I have no way of knowing whether they're a legit trustworthy site.

It looks like they only ship to the EU, but that's another issue. _________________ Casey--

Ooh - interesting. I have a feeling a lot of people would be interested in some of this stuff (especially at those prices). Might need to have a friend in the Netherlands help me out with the the shipping...

Yeah, there's some cool stuff there, and the prices are outstanding...almost too outstanding. Hence my concern. _________________ Casey--
