I just got my rebuilt calipers from O’Reilly’s. The the pistons on the left one are oriented to the top of the caliper and I think I need to reorient them to the bottom. I have looked at the Bentley and it says the bolt with the shoulder goes to the bottom but on the left one (the one with the piston oriented with the gaps on the top) the shoulder bolt will go into either hole. 😐 I have the stainless backing plates that hold the orientation and I have a paper template that will help get the orientation correct. Question is: can I rotate the pistons 180* while they are pushed in? _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

Yes, although it's difficult to grab them. Those battery post pliers work well for gripping the internal bore of the pistons, or you can carefully push on the edge of the raised part to rotate it.
Measure and compare the width between where the pads sit, that caliper with 2 big holes may be a later wide one. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Found that the caliper in question measures the same as the other, so not a later model. The first pair I got, one had only one bleeder and was substantially different from the other, the O’Reilly’s guy was pretty good about making it all right. He even ordered 2 calipers, one from each of his suppliers so I could choose. That first one had pistons that looked like they were cast in a backyard sandbox. Both now look very well made and machined. I got Wagner pads and new German rotors from Halsey in Portland.
I looked at those battery cable spreaders at NAPA but don’t think they spread wide enough. Think I’ll make a tool of my own out of a little hardwood block to turn the pistons. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

So it seems someone made a left fit the right or vice versa in the past, you'll need a sleeve to make the bolt fit the hole well if one is loose in there. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
