Not too much to report but it has been a long time so there has been a little progress - it's finding the photos that's taking me time. - I've just noticed there have been 43000 views of this thread - more than I ever anticipated. Updates to follow as I find the pictures...

Time for a bit of an update:
Turn the clock back just over 3 years ti when I had it blasted - I'll post some photos here but there are loads more in my gallery.

Phase 1 of blasting used a plastic media (from recycled electrical sockets, light switches etc if I recall correctly). There were no major surprises:

Something interesting that the blasting did reveal was these interesting stamps which I assume were on the sheet steel before the panels were pressed - I'd be interested to know more about them though:

The only slight disappointment post blasting was that the bonnet needs a bit more work than I first thought:

So, as the rats (or squirrels living in the tunnel had caused the closing panel to rot out, it was removed and the tunnel blasted and primed - luckily no new damage was found except for the cable conduits/tubes which had also rotted within the tunnel - this proved to be a very worthwhile exercise!

As my intention os to drive the car when it's finished I want to have the option to install seatbelts. As the closing panel was off the tunnel it made sense to install them as VW did:

My friend Seb said he was going to be in town so I took a day off work and we spent some time repairing one of my front wings:

I went to the Castle Hedingham Vintage Porsche show a couple of years back and was blown away by the Michelin X tyres on a 550 that Coys had there:

As I intend the car to be a driver I am seriously considering some of these for it. However, officially they don't fit on 3" rims so I am considering having some wider stock looking rims made - but that is some way off now - there are far more important things to do first.

I also saw more of these tyres on my first trio to the Prototyp Museum - an absolutely amazing place which I have since revisited on my way to HO17 and will be very happy to return there again someday.

If the tyres are good enough for these cars, they're good enough for me.

Here are a few more shots from the museum I felt relevant to this thread:

In 2015 I took a trip to Bad Camberg and got some record shots of L71/L72 Kabriolets:

Just for the fun of it one day I decided to roll her out and do an audit of parts - this is just he rear panels - I didn't unpack the front panels

Julian from Germany kindly sent me these images of an article in a club magazine about when the car was discovered - I'd love to have a copy if anyone has a spare please:

As we were preparing to move house we removed the old wood from the roof frame and temporarily installed the new wood to keep it all safe in transit:

We then bolted a fair few bits together to aid shipping and stuffed it in a big metal box - some of these pictures have ended up sideways despite being the right way up on my machine - if you know how to fix this please share!

We then recovered it at the other end...

This was a BIG move, it tooka lot of time, money and energy, hence the lack of updates...

Its always sat very low on the rear right corner
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and it turns out that was because there was no torsion bar there. I managed to source a pair in the US, complete with crusty springplates apparently rescued from a split beetle found in a river.

Well these torsion bars and spring plates were well fused together and refused to come apart, no matter how much heat and persuasion we used (no press available to help either)

so out came the angle grinder to dispatch the crusty springplate...

Job done - thanks to Paul for his help there!

Some years later on a different continent I got around to installing said torsion bar:

And finally, for the first time in decades, it is sitting level on all four wheels at stock height - I'm a very happy chap!

Earlier this year I made it over to Germany for the Petermax Muller Rennen vie the CSP, the Elba Tunnel, the Prototyp Museum, the PAnzer Museum and a great day's navigating a 1950 Split (Thanks so much for the invite Paul - it made my year!) to Hessisch Oldendorf - HO17.

It was great to meet Daniel and his 51 Kabriolet he'd driven from Sweden. He even had touch up paint correct for L71 and L72 so painted some on a beer can for me so I now have something to match - I've been trying to get a sample of L72 to match for years!

His car is amazing:

It wasn't the only amazing Split Kabriolet I saw on that trip:

I found some useful parts too:

And some tools for my new tool box:
