I think I read something about this before. I can't seem to find the subject now. Can anyone shed light on the different need and or usage of long barrel verses short barrel 36 HP 1200 cylinders? Thanks in advance. Bob

I found the change on Progressive refinements Part 1. 7/28/1957 I am wondering why the change happened. I can't find any other changes to the case or pistons at that time. I would think the longer barrel would give more stability (less piston slap) to the piston as it moves back and forth in the cylinder? Could be a clearance reason? Maybe the engines R&D showed it was not needed. Or, maybe they cut costs by using less material? Any knowledge or thoughts on the subject? Thanks

I think at mid to late 50', and even today, they cut costs wherever they can. So I think it is to cut costs. Also for the 58 year model, they made the case better, with improved oil feed. So probably it was a general small upgrade for the engine at tahat time.

I see a lot of factory refurbished 58 and newer cases/engines, but quite few/none 57 year model or older 36 hp factory refurbished engines.
My engine is from sept 57, was factory refurbished and put into my oval in 64, and have now done 100.000 miles more. My car had done around 75.000 miles in 64.

Might have something to do with oiling the cylinders? Shorter skirt will get more oil. Just a theory.
