Ralph.........
What's your understanding of the difference between the "silver" and "gold" early badges?

Hey Bob,
at the 1952 in Erbach as well as at the 1952 in Stuttgart it was allowed to participate with any Volkswagen - not only with those who had more than 100.000 kilometers. If you have a look on the poster for the first meeting, you can read "Herbstreffen und Zielfahrt der VW-Hunderttausender und aller Volkswagenfreunde" = "Autumn meeting and rally of VW-one-hundred-thousands and all VW friends".
Sorry for the poor translation, but you can derive the meaning.
1952 the golden badges where given to those VWs with more than 100.000 kilometers only, those who attended the meeting with VWs with less got the silver badge.
Today the silver ones are the rarer ones, as not that many drivers attended the meeting just for fun.
Regarding the 1954 meeting you can see the difference in the starting plate. I haven't seen any silver badges of the 1954 meeting until today. But I have one 1954 badge in my collection, which is 100% original, but slightly different from my other ones. The color of the banner is light blue, not red as on the other ones. In my opinion this is the 1954 version for those with less 100.000. I will post better pics later |
