Does anyone know what the caulk/waxy material is that VW used to seal between the body and pan on later models? My '73 was sealed with a very sticky waxy type of caulk. There was no gasket anywhere.
Thanks!

My 64 bug had the rubber seal, this stuff reminds me of "Duct Seal" [http://www.rectorseal.com/rectorseal-duct-seal-compound/] that is used to seal electrical boxes, but far stickier. It's nasty to clean off!
My daughter works for 3M, I'll have to check into those putty strips.
Thanks!

My 74 had the waxy type seal also. When I reassembled I used a windshield seal from a local parts store. I was very easy to work with and I am sure made a tight seal. But if I ever need to take it apart again, it may be very difficult.

My 72 had the same stuff, really seemed to be wax, like on a toilet flange. It'd be interesting to know exactly what it is.

This could be a first.... Has TheSamba been stumped on what this stuff actually is?
