Does anyone know how they work and are they rebuildable? Mine is not working and I know it should have 8 ohms at full and 80 ohms empty. I took the bottom cover off and can see the float rides on a center shaft and has two fine guide wires on the side that cause it to twist as it travels up. How is resistance created?

I can't answer in regards to rebuilding. If you decide to punt on making the old one work I'm using this new VDO sender...it seems to read accurately in my car on an original '58-dated 6v gauge.

Thanks Pete, that looks very similar to the KGPR repop. Is it stamped VDO or works with VDO gauges? I will be on my third repop sender.

Its is a VDO sender, made in Brazil. Looks nearly identical to original. I have not had much luck with the repop non-VDO senders.

Here it is disassembled. Looks like the wire to the threaded lug broke. Lots of cleaning and a little soldering to fix it.

Looks like if you removed the top connector nut, that square block in the top would come out. Then guessing there would be a set screw to trap the wire in the side of the block.
