The notches identify the MS as a stronger, 9 Tooth, 3.78 first gear.

I was asking about the notches on the first gear idler, there are two notches or oil groves in the thrust face off set from the centerline.

Looks like parts have been in the shaker. Very Happy

I put some rocker shafts in the shaker w/ peebles and they come out like chrome.

So what do you expect that fancy shinny stuff to do for you? Is this a street car of a race car?

The shinny stuff is called REM polishing. KCR uses it a lot.

REM'ing is an easy way to polish all those sharp edges, especially beneficial for R&Ps. We use it for all our LSD internals, esp side gears and spiders, which generally have a rougher tooth form.

Very few REM'ing tubs are equipped with the special pellets designed to work the root of the tooth equally, so consequently tips often will be over polished, while bases not enough.

Anyhow, REM'ing is a good idea, but far from the wonder panacea originally claimed .. 20* reduction in gear oil temp, longer R&P life, etc. (On the other hand, shot peening DOES deliver considerably longer gear life.)

So if you put weedle gears in a shaker with peebles they'll come out shinny? Think

Very Happy

REM super finishing is a shaker - ok? VIBRATORY FINISHER. I ,too, use the process on small parts a lot. If I had a big machine, I will use them on cranks too but that may be later on.

The surface finish is much improved by 300% w/ this type of finishing - so this means the parts will last longer as they will not wear as much versus having a rougher finish. The automotive industry is finally catching up w/ aircraft processes that has been in use for years.

Reducing rolling resistance to increase HP has been an open secret. But people just don't pay enough attention to it.

I use super-finishing on race-only engines as far as crankshaft goes. Those finishing tapes are very nice. I got the idea when I went to get parts from Oliver rods in Ohio back in the day and they have a superfinishing crank polisher doing some race cranks. The manager took me around the shop. The shop was an old barn -very inconspicous from the outside. But the inside was top-notch full race shop equipments.

A lot of people do not understand....that fully 50% of what makes REM polishing work....is actually chemical.

The parts are chemically etched to produce optimum surface area first. This does not remove measureable metal. Then a conversion coating chemical is used in the tumbler alternatingly with polishing. It converts metal and fills the "valleys" between the peaks....them the peaks are taken down or more accurately....rounded.... not reduced.....by polishing. This may be repeated several times.

What you end up with is a far smoother surface when the wider range of surface profile is looked at. It does this not by reducing the measurement of the part significantly by bring the micro-peaks of the surface DOWN (which would be over polishing as gears mentioned).......but by bringing the valleys between the peaks UP....and therefore changing the flank or "hill" angle between the top of the peaks and the floor of the valley.

The effect of this...rounding the peaks but not greatly reducing the height.....and bringing the valley floors up.....creates more of a plateau effect.

Typically just looking at roughness......of say a machined part.....Ra and Rz are looked at....if simply a part with diemsnisonal accuracy is needed. But when looking to reduce friction .....looking carefully at the Rp ,Rv and resulting Rt.....which descibes peak to valley floor ratio and resulting slope between.....is important. Ray

Exactly. However, the REM machine itself is quite versatile, in that the chemicals don't HAVE to be used. We find using it dry is perfect for normalizing (breaking in) our friction discs.
