|
|
i have just brought back my split to life , completely overhauled engine , new brakes , front axle tie rod ends , bushings , shock absorbers , everything .....but i am experiencing a loud "thump" at the rear end every time i go over a bump on the road .......
replaced the torsion bars bushings , checked everything , but the noice persisted ......
the mechanic took the gear box apart and found excessive play between the rear axle ball and the axis cover , looks like something wore out ......
is there a cure for that ?? i thought about hardchrome the axis cover end , but i wanted to hear someone else`s advice to see if there is an easier way to fix it .......
any help ?? _________________ in my Garage:

I don't know much about splits, but what about checking the body mounts at the back? It was the cause of some noise I had. _________________ 21 million of these cars were built, and everyone of them were sold...kinda astounding given how unreliable they are.---johhnypan |

Checked everything , noise seems to come from excessive play at the contact of the rear axis tubes with the gear box case ...... any cure for this?? _________________ in my Garage:

You normally set the gap between the axle end bell and the gearbox with the correct amount of gaskets which act like shims to take out the slack and seal at the same time. I`m assuming that this has been done? |

unfortunately i still have play after i removed ALL the gaskets .......
there is a plastic "daisy" shaped , white plastic spacer that fits later models , i didn`t find nothing similar for crashboxes .......wear on the case is evident .... _________________ in my Garage:

How much play you have?
0,40 - 0,60 mm is normal
0,70 mm is maximum

the daisy from a later trans will work. you need to open up the hole where the axle goes slightly. there is small lip in the center of the daisy to keep it center in the hole.
