Hi I recently changed the stub axle on my 72 bus and today I realized that the stub axle is going in.
I really don't know what is going on. No noise

Visually there were no differences between stub axle and hub that I replaced.
Are there differences between vanagon and bus stub axle?

Thanks

I'm currently in Hancok, New-Y trying to figure it out.

What? you changed your stub axle, and now its going in?

so you changed your axle, and now there is no noise... and you're concerned?

Going in, I mean in the bearing hub, so I look at the wheel, I see the Axle nut, and it was against the wheel hub when I torqued it to 250 ft lbs

now there is a inch of splines visible.

Like if the stub axle were too long now.

Is it possible the guy sold me a longer axle from 68-70 bus and I fitted it on a 72 bus?

Yes; this is exactly what would happen if you installed an early stub axle in a 1971 or later bus.

One tell if you don't have them side by side (the early axle is an inch longer and unusable on a 1971+ bus,) is to look for a collar where the CV rests. Here are some NOS early style axles; see the collars?

Here is a late style, missing the collared CV support.

I do not know if there were crossover years that were the late axle with the early color.

Good luck finding the correct part; I have two spares for sale, so send me a PM if you have a hard time finding one.

It's not "possible"- it's what happened.

You beat me to it. Smile

Actually, IIRC from our debacle with the Columbo bus this summer late ones are available new and are shared with Vanagons; that said, I'd trust a good used over new for anything these days unless the new one is German.

If you are stuck out on the road, find a local machine shop and have them make you a collar that fits over the stub axle so the nut has something to tighten against. Others can probably tell you whether the spacer between the bearings and stuff will work correctly if you do this.

You're axle nut appears to be worn on the inside, you should clean it up so you have a flat surface where it meets the hub.

Sorry for the late reply, I found some spacers and installed them between the hub and nut, and torqued it to 250 ft lbs.

Will look to exchange my stub axle now for an late one.

Thanks for your help.
