I just bought 2 each T3 dampers from a guy on the samba classifieds. He said he had one more. Mine were $64 delivered (for both)

regarding the original post..

I bought my 71 bus with a mostly stock engine except for a Bugpack header/collector with a single muffler. It ran ok, but it droned. I bought in on the 'get a stock exhaust' thing that went around a couple years ago, and when I got it all bolted up there was a very noticeable (bad)difference in seat of the pants power.

Plus the fan air preheaters were junk and I could never get the entire setup lined up very well.. I ran it for maybe 9 months.

Finally pulled it back off, welded up some small leaks in the bugpack system, welded on a set of EMPI heater box flanges, and I'm much happier with everything. The handful of exhaust leaks had a lot to do with the drone, even though they were all pretty small.

The only thing I would do differently now is buy a better made header collector muffler and get the powdercoat shop to ceramic coat it all.

Got the issue on mine resolved using the Jopex muffler. See this thread for details:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8621325#8621325

Ozz, thanks for starting this thread. You helped me and others here immensely by being an unwilling Guinea pig, for sure. It's great that we now have a few different alternatives for fixing the problem without having to go EMPI, loud, or both.

These discussions really point out just how inconsistent parts quality can be, as well. I get the feeling that someone else- maybe even you- doing this with a Jopex stock style muffler might not get the exact same results. After all, Bill was able to just bolt his Jopex on and be happy in his thread, but then from other posts later in his thread it seems something changed.

And then, too, it's sort of funny that I seem to have been the only one to NOT have issues with the heater connections. In fact, this Bus has about the best heat I've ever experienced in a stock Bus. Of course, the new front to rear tube and two layers of Fat Mat I wrapped it in may have helped with that as well.

Fat Mat, can you give more info? Going to be in that area of the ductwork very soon. Have the heater control cables installed, what connects the flappers to the "Y" connection on a stock setup. thank you! mike

I buy this stuff 100 SF at a time. Excellent quality:

Not sure about your question, though. Are you talking about the Y at the front? the Y at the rear has no flappers.

If you mean the Y at the front that depends on the year.

Thanks for the followup on the Fat Mat. The Engine is in, hooked up to the tranny. The heat exchangers have a S shaped pipe fastened to them, the S shaped pipe has the cable control for the hot air fastened to the top if it. From the cable controlled piece to the Y shaped in let of the tube which runs up to the front end of the Bus. What ducting goes from the heater control boxes to the Y of the long tube? 77 Transporter, 2.0 liter Auto trans. thank you. Have no idea, pieces were not there when I tore her down.

Ah, you mean the muffler tubes. Like these:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1926137

The two short fat ones go from the heater boxes to the body. One is longer than the other... if you look you'll see one heater box sits further forward.

The other one goes from the front "Y" to the front duct in the floor under the "aisle" between the two front seats.

Get good used ones. The new ones are the usual shitty quality, plus they use fiberglass fiber for insulation, which is dangerous because the fibers will blow off and come through the ducts, and your eyes and lungs don't get along with fiberglass fibers last I checked...

Stupid. Rolling Eyes
