Ya I had the "VANAGON H4s" and thought the improvement over the =black-hole us spec lights = was not worth the 450.00 they sell for over here in the states. This thread was all about putting in a US spec sealed beams or the H4-sealed beams with the flat face.

For reference look at the pic gallery. Find a good pic of the front of a US spec vanagon. The lights have a dark spot in the middle. When you add light form a bulb the dark spot intensifies until the light is being sucked IN like a mini black-hole. ( I may have exaggerated a little??? )

Very Happy jcl

Did you ever end up installing these lights in your van?

Well after many months I've finally got some progress on my retrofit of hid projectors in the Westy. I wired the harness today and test fired so here's some teaser shots. More to follow.

FYI I found these Ford headlight adjusters on ebay. They look like they might work.

Whatever you do not buy those adjusters! I bought a similar style and had to replace them. The adjusters from the auto parts stores work just fine and are much sturdier.

How are you keeping the 5x7 headlight secure with only two tabs left for the retaining ring on saab buckets ? Ford econoline buckets seem to have slightly different tab locations

I have been melting a few relays. From bus depot... As well as harnesses. So now I'm building my own high output relay 70AMP and thick gage wires. Also the weak part was the bulb socket I need to source a material that doesn't melt like that.

Or do I have something wrong in my harness where the bulb would overheat?

It would be nice if we could source some ceramic bulb sockets

I'm able to use 3 out of 4 on mine and it works just fine.

Lots of ceramic H4 connectors on ebay if that's what you're looking for. Easy and cheap to swap.

We will have brand new square E-code H4 headlight assemblies for '86-91 Vanagons early in 2018. This is brand new aftermarket production and should be in the $325 range for a complete set. I will have more info in a week or two.

Jay Brown is the man. He sold me these bulb sockets, relay kit, and recommended Cibie lenses and Osram Hyper 85/80W h4 bulbs. Wow it is literally night and day difference. I'll post a picture when the van gets rolling again soon

GREAT timing! I was about to put my whole square grill/headlight/bucket combo with extra bulbs up for a 6-pack of microbrew. Are these H4 and are there any mechanical modifications required?
