Hey Samba,
I've been having a bit of an issue with my shifter alignment. No matter how far up, down, or in the middle I go, it just not want to stick in 3rd gear(also grinds).
it is weird because before I remove the shifter every gear was working fine.
hopefully someone can help!
I am try to avoid buying a new transmission.
the things I have done:
-replace the shifter
-replace the hanger and wielded
-replace shiftrod bushing
-rear couplet |

Check the shift linkage coupler under the rear seat.
Make sure the bolts for that are still tight and properly safety wired.
Do you have the early or later style of coupler?? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Make sure you have this plate positioned properly under the shifter. It goes the way it's show in this pic from the gallery. The little ramp is on the right and faces up.

Positive that the new hanger was in the absolute correct place when it was welded?
Is the shift bushing still locked in place in that hanger? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The exact same problem came up suddenly in a newly-rebuilt transaxle in my '63. Was done less than 1K miles ago by a recommended shop too. Linkage has a new bushing, is well-greased and properly adjusted. I can't engage 3rd gear, even with the engine off, despite the gear lever having a good solid connection to the input shaft on the trans.
I figure that something let go inside and the trans needs to come out to see what's going on. Adjusting the shift plate up & back can only do so much... _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)
