This number is stenciled on my fan shroud. The engine is a AH with an engine number that would put it in 1973. (My Thing is also 73). Could this have possibly been the original engine? I was led to believe that Thing engines started with AM.

There is similar number found on various pieces of engine tin. Have no idea what they might signify. |

And a search would probably turn it up. |

Ok. THanks for the leads. I tried to search but didn’t find these threads.
Now , the question. Assuming the fan shroud, with the 181, stenciled on it, belongs to the engine case. And the engine case is an AH, how does that jive with the statements that Thing Motors began with A.M.? |

The 181 on the fan shroud is probably from a creative previous owner who owned a stencil.
The engine is a transplant.
Things sold in the US, '73 and '74 had AM cases.
Additionally, '73 models were equipped with gas heaters, and fan shrouds without the air outlets for heat exchangers.
Sometimes M-codes or option codes are stenciled on the fan shrouds, but not the vehicle model numbers. |

My guess is the fan shroud was transplanted to another case.
Also you mention your Thing is a '73 but it appears the shroud may be a different year since it has the air outlets.
Here is a thread with everything you wanted to know about fan shrouds.

Thanks for the clarification. And the link to fan shrouds. TheSamba always provides the assistance I’m looking for.
Also this doesn’t make me feel bad that I painted over the stenciled numbers. |
