Hello,
I have a 1973 bus with a 1700cc engine. The nut has fallen off of the lower alternator mounting bolt (hinge)- This is the nut which fits the bolt the alternator hinges on, not the mounting bracket itself.

I replaced it with an M8-1.25 flange nut and tightened it very tight. Within a week, this nut was lost as well.

What kind of nut and/or washer is this supposed to take? Thanks!

Looks to me like your bolt is too short. Get a longer bolt and use a nylock or stover nut as needed.

Hi there! Thank you for the responses. The bolt is the correct one, it's just that it had gotten jostled out a bit before I took the picture. My bolt has the notch out of the head like the one in the picture SGKent posted:

Can someone tell me which way the bolt should be oriented, as far as the notch goes? That way I can be sure the bolt is all the way in.

I will try a nylon lock nut. Is a washer necessary in that case?

Thank you!

The bolt is clearanced so it will fit only one way, the cutout goes towards the alternator. A washer isn't strictly necessary with a locking nut, but you do need enough thread length so the nylon part of the locknut has threads sticking out passed it or it will not provide sufficient friction. If nothing else works you could use some Loctite on the threads to hold the nut.

the notch is square. As long as it is in the bracket it is ok. I believe the nut faces towards the front of the bus.
