Took last week off as I was supposed to go ride in the desert ert, but ended up canceling, so a week in the garage!
Started by stripping the rock guard off the pan. I do this to make it easier to blast and put less heat into the pan during blasting.
A little heat helps to loosen it
Then off to the blasters...nothing like standing outside blasting in minus 10 Celsius to make you realize you should have started on the pan about four months ago. 🤦♂️

After blasting some rust and accident repairs required.
Used various bits of scrap metal to form all three pieces as well as a shrinker/stretcher to get the bend in the pan repair section. Formed the top bend, by hammering over a 6” piece of 1/2” wall pipe
After fitting, decided to heck with the mig and brought out the Tig. Had to tighten the gaps up, but most of it could have been fusion welded (no filler rod) but I didn’t want to be able to see the weld after. So filler rod and grinding was in order. |

And to make myself feel better about going with the auto, I bought this gem off of eBay.
And then promptly started wore brushing the rear sub frame. A little more work, then it will be into the front beam.

Accident repair. This car was hit really hard on the drivers side. So hard in fact, the welds were broken on the seat tracks. Here is a “clever brace they had used over the repair. I cut it or rather chiseled it off.
And made some panels and tigged them in.
Unfortunately no pics of the broken welds prior to zapping them back together.
That’s all I have for now. |

My poor mans rotisserie, bought two engine stands and used some square and angle to make brackets to bolt to the pan. Offset it to get it rotate 180 degrees. Definitely worth it, and don’t have to ask for help in flipping the pan over.

So after some more wire brushing another trip to the U-blast was in order. This time with the remaining suspension bits. Back home in the warmth of the garage
In an effort to save both cash and time (powdercoater is closed from the 22nd to the 2nd) I prepped all the parts with aluminum tape.
And to copy Steve, got me some gas and to clean out the rear wheel bearings.
You will note, o did this outside to avoid any possible fire inside the garage. |

Thanks Bob. Back to cold and snow here the last couple of days. Good thing as it kept me indoors and working on the beam. So this was a little odd, both beams are from a LHD car, but rotted out on opposite sides.
So the only thing to do is cut off the bad and replace with the good.
After welding it was time to tackle the broken shock bolt. First thing, tig a metric nut onto the old bolt.
And then let cool or aid the cooling with some WD-40. Then impact it out
And then add paint!

Not too much happened over the holidays, but I did manage lose some fingerprints...
And started working on the tin to remove the dents and reshape it, this little ball peen hammer worked well as a dolly
And now I am waiting on parts and powdercoat, so I finally tracked down a proper welding table top...the old 1/4” plate is gone, and in its place...1/2” with 5/8” holes. Time to order up some strong arm post clamps and then wait for a project to come along to utilize this beast.

Looks good. What did you use?
The new work table looks good too. That's really a beast of a table. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Bob,
Glad to see someone is still reading, even if it is about the boring stuff. Many, many grits of sand paper to start and the. Finished with red (fine) scotchbrite. The tin is going to be powder coated with a textured powder (silver vein or wrinkle semi gloss black) as is the fan shroud due to extensive pitting. It will be finally nice to have a proper welding table, and I am going to be making fixtures to hold all my metal working tools. Which means no more clamping them in the vice! Wait till I get pics loaded of the part I drove 700 miles round trip to get today. |

Your block sure is pretty! It will contrast well with the tins. I sanded my fingerprints off 1 time on my first concrete/rock wall woodstove backstop project! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Nice to see some progress being made..
I'm jealous of several things now.
What with the rotisserie,
Now a polished case, and a proper welding table??
I -had- the fan shroud polished on my bus years ago.
Living in Phoenix, it stayed that way for a couple of years.
Moving near the ocean, there was nothing that would keep it shiny..
I'd be looking at how the tin fits the car before finishing tin..
There will be a lot of trimming/tweaks/holed to fill, etc. if you are going to make it nice. _________________ Bus Motor Build

The case won't be completely polished, I started brushing it with some scotch brite. Have a couple of fully polished motorcycle engines and don't really want to have to clean and polish this one too.
The tin work (except for the missing piece) was fitted up and in the car prior to the body being removed, however it was with the manual transmission, so i may have some issue with the automatic. It will get fitted all again before going off to powder. |

In that case about all you will need to do is add a hole for the AT dipstick.
On my son's car, the rear bus tin got a hole added to it years ago when I was fitting the engine and tin into a 69 Square with AT. Some day we'll weld in a patch and cover it, but right now it's not really bothering anything. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Been awhile, but work is still progressing. Parts are back from the coater
And I made a trip south to the Greyhound station in Great falls, MT. The 6 hour drive was worth it to pick this up. It was shipped from California for around a hundred bucks. Would have been close to five times that to get it shipped to my door. The drive and visit to Sonic (we don’t have those) was worth it. I am certain that the drivers must have cursed this at every station...
