To convert the rear of my 71 bug I have drilled the spot welds holding the rear seat back carpet rail thingy holder, putting in a 5/8" pine sanded plywood base which will be secured to the old parcel tray, have a hinged opening for battery and VR access and be carpeted. When I showed the idea to a body man in OKC he flipped out said the metal in the rear would buckle causing the trans to hit the body, now structurally I find that hard to believe for there is not going to be hundreds of pounds stored back there plus the plywood is getting secured. Cardboard template in place.
Anybody have any thoughts on this or is it just wives tales about the buckling?

Man, in your pics, that color looks like fresh Bahama Blue!
I find the proclamation of your luggage shelf/tray buckling to be completely laughable. Even with a few hundred pounds distributed evenly across it, it won't collapse...unless you're jumping your Bug baja-style in Moab, doing bone-crunching landings that would completely fold and obliterate your suspension. I think you'll be fine. |

You might consider a hinged door for battery maintenance.

Already part of the plan, once the plywood is cut then the access hatch will be cut, hinged, platform anchored, top padded with jute then carpeted. |

The interior sill just below the rear window, and the interior quarters just behind the side windows. Isn't that your effort to make a Euro interior? |

It looks great...brings more of the outside beauty of the car INSIDE
I also like the omission of the padded dash. |

I know this is a bit old but wondering how it turned out. Thinking of doing something similar with my ''73. Thanks. _________________ 1973 SuperBug - Project just starting.
