Hmm. Not sure what's going on there. I just went to the site and it seemed to be functioning.
We appreciate the effort man! |

Will shit. I left clinic Saturday morning and came to Xela. My only weekend away from clinical duties.
I'm set to start heading back to the USA next week.
My van started running like shit en route to Xela. . I opted to have it checked out in Xela vs trying to fix things myself. The little village that we are in is remote (closest grocery store is 3 hours away to give you an idea).
Turned out to be a failed injector that could not be repaired.
Subarus are not common here, but hopefully we can find a used replacement so I can leave next week! |

if you have an ohm meter with you, check the resistance of the injector. compare it to the resistance of a working one.
if the resistance is the same, the coil inside the injector is not burnt out. you MAY be able to get it going by soaking it in carb cleaner, warming it, tapping on the body while applying 12 volts, or putting a vacuum on the fuel connection end and trying to draw some carb cleaner up thru it from the nozzle. you've got a vacuum source from the van engine!

Thanks guys.
But like I said. I've been staying in a remote area where we are lucky to have running water and electricity for more than 1 week straight. There is NO access to parts.
So the van in at a shop in the nearest city (Xela). They have checked the injector and it toast.
We are trying to source a replacement, but it's been pretty tuff. |

Damn, they are expensive! I was going to offer to go to Bellingham, buy one and send it to you but...

"So I have a 84 auto Westy powered by a 2000 EJ25, small car swap kit. I’m en route to a remote access clinic in Guatemala."

Shipping doesn't really happen here.
We actually depend on people coming in the country quite a bit.
But...
Hopefully we sourced one and will have it tomorrow. |

I went through Mexico to Guatemala and back (Boston-to-Boston) in my '66/ 40 horse (single carb), way back in '74. There were a good number of splittys all over Mexico and every low-tech little mechanic shop knew them inside out. They were making VWs in Mexico in those years, I think.
Give us reports on today's mechanics' familiarity with waterboxers, and with fuel injection. And are some Vanagon parts around, or is almost every part a challenge? |

We ended up finding a used injector in Guate. Cleaned it, put it in, and everything is back to good (for now).
The engine is a 2000 EJ25 from a subaru, not a common car in Guatemala.
I am US bound in 2 days. Not sure If I'll spend 3 days in Mexico or 2 weeks. |

Well that was interesting...
My wiper switch (at least I think that's the problem) went bad yesterday.
I'm hoping to find one really soon. I'll be taking a break in Phoenix, AZ to visit a friend. Maybe I can get one shipped there.
Just after I got in the USA I was pulled over. I had a bad tail light. It was fine just 1 hour prior. The officers wanted to search my vehicle without reason.
I declined, but stated I would allow them to do a search if it was really necessary.
I was cited for not having insurance. I explained that I had insurance, but since my policy did not cover international travels, it was on pause. I explained I just spent the better part of my year doing medical relief work without pay and would appreciate some understanding with my situation. I simply needed to make a call to reinstate it and had plans to do this at my 1st stop. I offered to make the call right than/there.
Anyhow, I was cited. I was in the wrong and get it. I get border security.
I had huge reservations about driving through places like Texas and Arizona.
I've had issues here before and have honestly avoided these states for the past 15 years. Which really sucks because there is real beauty here.
Some of the attitudes here will keep me from coming back. |

think he did give you a break as usually a car WO insurance is towed on the spot- and you take a taxi home-
While on the subject- have you any expirence with foreign visiters here on visas getting auto insurance to drive in the states, or can any one get insurance? _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Really? A tow?
Wow, that's strict! In Washington they give you a citation.
If it went down like that, I would have just called my insurance company on the spot anyhoo.
I get I was in the wrong by the letter of the law.
I just frustrated. Most of my income is diverted back into health projects. I just spent most of this year doing humanitarian work in humble conditions (6 of us live off of about $15 USD per week) in a region with one of the leading infant and maternal mortality rates. So my outlook is a little different.
I just got jump back into US culture and mindset for a bit I guess. |

In socialist Canada, you'll be walking if they catch you without insurance and a huge fine too. What happens if you get in an accident without insurance? |

Thanks for the info guys. I literally had just crossed the border.
I'll have to do better planning in the future.
I get it, really...
Before I left the USA my GTR was hit by someone who fled the scene, thought to be uninsured.
I"m still dealing with that mess. |
