Restoring my '69 bug, took the transmission out and was attempting to remove the bolts that hold the arm to the tortion plate, however the head of the bolt contacts the trailing arm before it can come all the way out.
Do I need to remove the tortion plates and trailing arms as an assembly?
If so... why have bolts to connect them? Alignment purposes, since the holes are slotted?

The holes in the trailing arms are slotted, think if you get the diagonal trailing arm "more forward" in the slots, that you can wiggle the bolts out. I've removed trailing arms, but many decades ago.
I can't remember if the big allen-head bolt (17mm allen) needs to come out first to allow more movement.
Yes, the holes are slotted to allow rear toe adjustment. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Once you remove them, remember to install them with the nut on the inside and the bolt coming through from the outside in. |
Yes, that would help. Just remember that someone got those bolts in there ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. If you run out of options just hack off the bolt and get new bolts, but as mentioned, it got in there somehow. They didn't build the car around that bolt. |

I freaked when I encountered this. Even started to work on those huge things that hold the trailing arms to the frame. Then I took a Phillips screwdriver and knocked that bolt right out. It popped right out no problem at all. It went right back in too, the same way it came out. Can't figure it out. Looked impossible to me. Its an illusion. It pops right out. Go get 'em. |
My guess is that with the hole being slotted, it allows the bolt to pass through at an angle. _________________ shakers73

It's magic. Gives me chills just thinking about it. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
