This was one of my first repairs, can be kinda dangerous. Also check this thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=296278
for more info.
HELPFUL HINTS- 1)post a classified ad, you should be able to find the parts from someone on here (remember to specify which side), 2)take pics of the hinge and pin location before disassembly, 3)wear gloves and be wary of high tension! _________________ 1967 13 window walkthru bus

Glad I ran across this thread. I did this once before without the instructions and even though we were successful, it was the scariest thing I've ever done. I saw the tool, so I figured out how to make one of my own out of a factory jack handle.
The tool worked like a champ. However, that's still a lot of freakin' tension. With the tool and instructions, this job is now the second scariest thing I've ever done. _________________ Alex

picked up the homemade tool from islandveedub and it took about 1/2 hour to pull the assembly from a parts bus roof and install it on my bus. if anyone in the sacramento area needs to use it let me know. |

Most excellent! After 25 years of commercial fishing I still have all my fingers and would like to keep it that way. |

Here is a video how to install the hinge. I know it's in Spanish but it's pretty straight forward. One thing to note, the guy in the video says never try to do this alone, you need 2 people.

Just installed my hatch hinges and thought I would add a little here as the instructions I found were not that clear. I was dreading the job but it turned out to be quite easy once I figured out how the rods went in.
First I installed the hinges and used some tape to keep them out of the way. Don't forget the clips. Easier to put them in now without the arms in the way.
The rods are different. The end that hooks into the roof support is leaned over a bit. This is the rod for the right side hinge.
The rod can be hooked into the support slot and then the end allined with the hole. Move it around and wiggle it and it should slide in.
On the other end of the rod slide on the arm.
I built a simple tool to wind the bar. I didn't need as much hook on the end. You will definitely need something like this to install the rod safely.
Hook the tool in the rod. Keep some space between the tool and the arm. You will likely need the try it a few time to get the arm lined up with the support.
While standing at rear hold the rod about 6" from the arm with one hand and push down and forward on the tool to rotate the rod. You can guide the rod up into the forward slot in the support. Notice support is between the arm and the tool.
Once in place wind the rod a bit more to insert the arm pin. Insure the pin is all the way in before removing the tool.
Pull down on the hinge to release the tool. Install the clip on the pin so it doesn't work out
After the second rod can be hooked into the support by pulling down on the left hinge a little. You could hook both rods in at the start but I thought it might be easier if it wasn't in the way. _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration
