The vacuum tube is tweaked out too.
I can't figure out where the breather hose is hooked to on the air cleaner end, maybe the air cleaner has an extra connection pipe added?
I've seen that a few times on air cleaners |
That is odd. I don't think a stale air, November of '60 bus, 40hp would have a breather anyway, right? |
I don't think so either. I'd expect it would be more like the pic below:
The pre-heat to the left heater box I'd think would be correct. If you are bothered, might look up the changes in Progressive refinements. Some of the 40hp air cleaners have the attachment for the breather hose, some don't.

Yup, early 28 pict carb. There is a thread about them recently, so I though it interesting this bus had one. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=690973 |

It's a November 1960 bus, so sometimes people call that a '60, though I'd call it a '61.

Should it have pocketed door panels? |
Yes, they used pockets through April 1961. Even a very few with the como green and basalt interiors.

I wonder how "perfect" they really were when they left the factory compared to the high-end restorations some people pursue. The overspray underneath being one example, whereas OCD restorers mask off between colors... _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

You'd think so?... or, at least have the correct rear view mirror. _________________ aka: Evan

A couple more of the engine for posterity. I agree that it looks like the crankcase vent hose attaches to the horizontal air leaner tube somehow. Weird.

I think the snorkel placement on Linda's bus was a little optimistic.
Fording 6' deep water may be problematic. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Aussie-spec buses had the air intakes up high not to avoid water, but dust. _________________ -Thom

Right but that's not an Aussie-spec bus (with the high vents), one example seen here:
Either way its a cool mod, I would rock it as is. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Correct; I was trying to point out that it could be to prevent dust ingestion rather than water ingestion. _________________ -Thom

Yes I'm surprised the Gold Mine bus hasn't sold already Clara. A bullet bus with clean title in hand, good bones and reputable seller for 10K I've been keeping low because I want it but must make room first although it will be gone by the time I have room.
