POR or other similar product that reduces the iron oxide back to something harder, unless you get to shiny metal in which case , primer _________________ .ssS! |

rust never sleeps, rust never dies, but you can encapsulate it..
and there are various methods and opinions..
mine, after I scrub and wire brush, I use a rust converter
then you can primer/paint or use an encapsulate like POR15..
some use POR 15 (Paint Over Rust) exclusively. _________________

So, two options
1/ I remove ALL of the rust and go back to bare metal
Use primer and paint
Question: If I'm under the body of the car, can I just use POR 15 anyway?
2/ If I'm not sure all rust is removed after brushing, use POR 15. Do you need to use the POR primer first, or do some of you only use the POR "Permanent coating" and call it a day?
Has anyone from Canada tried the "Rust Check" product line? Easier to get than POR here... http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/search-results.html?q=rust%20check _________________ '90 Little Blue Truck, 2WD auto, FAS GenV 2.0 NA (AVH) |

Stupid Oil question here. I just picked up some Valvoline VR1 racing oil as i read it has the high zinc content our Vanagons crave. I then read on the back of the bottle that it will have a more detrimental effect on catalytic converters. Should I even bother with this stuff? I like zinc as much as the next guy but not at the expense of my 'spensive California cat. I was thinking maybe to just run it for 3k miles and them swap but what do you smarter fellows think. |

I've been running Brad Penn (w/healthy dose of zinc) because
I'd rather replace the cat before it's time than the engine...

VR1 was the recommended oil from Jerry at NWCR when I picked up my rebuilt 2.2. After the first 3 changes I moved to running Castrol Full Synthetic and add a bottle of STP Zinc additive on every other change. Sort of splitting the difference. I run a MAG Flow CC and muffler on 10 cents tuned exhaust system. _________________ Curent ride: 87 2WD Westy, 2012 Jetta Sportwagon 2.5S

Ok, here is a lazy question:
I've tried the search, to no avail, but I remember someone posted corrected numbers for Syncro wheel alignment. I'm fighting with mine at the moment.
I've done THREE alignments in the last two months, and nothing feels right.
(Plus, I get different results each time!) _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

I think my 17mm from my Beetles fit my diesel 5 speed but my memory is about as reliable as a Trump press conference _________________ .ssS! |

I am in the midst of this. I had to have the fill plug removed after it got rounded out. Now that I have had it removed and replaced, I can see about dumping the old and filling it with sweet new stuff.
Some things I learned:
The working space is…snug with the shift rod right in your way. If you lift the van higher than I did, you may do better. Some people recommend making a driver with a 10mm bolt and two nuts jammed on: that may work if it's long enough for you to engage the innermost nut. It will take all the leverage you can bring, especially if it hasn't ever been changed. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

The size is nice, but it's just the tips that make the first impression. |

I bought a solar trickle charger at Harbor Freight. It looks just like the one GoWesty sells but cost less. If I leave this plugged into the cig lighter, can it drain power from the battery at night when there is no sun? _________________ 87 syncro tintop

Ok another stupid question- if I deflate tires to navigate washboard roads, how long would it take to reinflate them with a bicycle pump? _________________ 87 syncro tintop

It depends if you use a high-pressure or high-volume bicycle tire pump. HV pumps are used to fill mtn bike tires (about 65 psi and more volume), HP pumps are used to fill road bike tires (about 130 psi but much less volume).
If you use an HV pump it’ll take a loooong time, give yourself an hour or so if you’re in great shape and you don’t air down too much. If you use an HP pump plan on about twice as long, i.e. buy an electric pump (even s cheap, single piston compressor will take an annoyingly long time).
p.s. The above assumes you’re using a floor pump, if you’re trying to use a compact frame mounted pump plan on a full day of pumping in which time the pump will disintegrate. _________________ - Jim
