Trying to make sure things are sealed up properly in and under my cab and had a few lingering questions about various holes.
#1) What is this hole next to my shifter for?
#2) Is this a PO made hole or a factory drain hole? Looks jagged. Located to the left of the steering box.
#3) There's a hole behind the heater piping that doesn't appear to do anything. Should this be plugged or does it have a purpose? Looks too high to be a drain.
#4) PO apparently sealed up these holes. Should I undo their handy work or is it fine to let it be?
#5) Do these areas on the far left and right get plugs/seam sealer or are they supposed to be like this?
#6) No pictures, but is the main wiring harness supposed to have a grommet where it enters the bus in the front? Again there's kind of a decent amount of air gap here that would let the elements in.
Thanks! |

Just cut patches out of the sides of an oil bottle or jug, clean them well and silicone them over any holes.
Not sure on a grommet for the wiring harness, there may have just been putty used? Again silicone would fill the voids and reduce abrasion. You could wrap the harness with some kind of plastic and then silicone the wrap to the metal of the body, that might give some extra abrasion protection.
Some of the plugs up under the front had plugs originally, maybe all? |

the main wiring harness has a grommet then is sealed with putty. No idea on the other holes. Can't give you the grommet part number, found it in the fiche once. They are still available but to install one requires either cutting it or ripping the whole harness out to thread it on. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

You should put your model year in your signature. What year is your bus? _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

It's for the shifter wiring when it has an auto transmission installed, the rest are for speedo cables and heater cables for the most part, don't close them up until after the first test drive.
Some had shittily applied sealer on those lower body panel seams that soon shed itself, but they are best left open to allow the road nasties to drian away. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks for the replies. Bus is a 79. Doesn't have the correct M-plate so not sure it wasn't an automatic, but given the transmission was an 091 I can't imagine it was. |

Don't think so. Was just over looking at another bus. Think it was a 78 and it had the same hole next to the shifter that wasn't used. Just had the floor mat. I guess this particular area has the extra pan below it so it shouldn't be exposed to much of the environment. Either way it's interesting. |

They all have the hole, even if they came with a std. trans. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My early 76 with manual transmission does not have the hole. Original floor pan. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

OK, to split hairs all 77-79 buses have them, it seems to coincide with the late auto transmission from what I can tell.
I'm fairly sure they had a piece of black duct tape stuck on them when new. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My 73, manual transmission, has that hole next to the shifter also, Nothing has been replaced, so it came that way. I was wondering what it was for also. _________________ 1969 Deluxe, owned since 1973

Buy a funnel and some tubing that will fit through the hole and you will be able to drink a lot of beer and keep driving using the "Road Tube" to piss. |
