Hi Everyone.

I am excited to find this thread. Thank you all for the wealth of information.

I recently purchased a 59 Convertible beetle and I had a question regarding front turn signal placement. The previous owner removed all chrome for the "cal" look and I want to put it back to a more stock look. I have the original turn signals and I see the welded cover plate body work under the fender from the PO but i was hoping someone could give me the measurements to help with placement.

Basically i want to know the distance from the top chrome part of the headlight ring/frame to the front part of the lens of the signal. I can use that info to make sure i have the correct placement for the year, etc......

Thank you very much.

Hi guys

Awesome thread !

I an currently restoring a 1958 Beetle convertible. I bought it as a box of parts and it hasn't seen the road in over 10 years. Here are some recent pics of the restoration as it stands. My question is this - does anyone have any pics or video of how the window mechanisms work ? Front and rear ? I have a box of parts and unsure how they go together ? All the best - Paul

Hi, I've just started restoring my windows and the sashes/ window lifters are rusted out. I can't find them anywhere to buy, I can only find short ones that I could weld together. Has anybody got any better solution?

Do a search for Virtanen, I've seen some window support rails in his site.
I had some made for my 1960 at a sheet metal shop, came out Ok, but Virtanen
has made them and listed them on his site..
If you use a Master guide welding them together is a good way to go also
as the shape is very important as far as I'm concerned.
I will be in Perth later this year, let me know if i can be of assistance.

Hi, thanks for the info, I've found virtanen and been in touch with him and he indeed has plans to make the sashes. Are you holidaying in perth? Thanks again for your help!

Started working again on restoring my '60 Bug convertible. Looking for a source to purchase a windshield for it. Clear glass would be the choice to match the side glass instead of green glass.

Thanks for any input.

Here is my 59 Alabaster vert. Been off road in garage/barn since 1976. It is daily driver status now. Everything works.

Notice the gas tank and trunk cardboard are white like the body. Vert frame is body color . Amazingly solid. One key works all locks and ignition. Wiring is exactly like it left the factory. No modern connectors. All screw terminal parts even the oil pressure switch and starter. VW stamped exhaust. VW Pistons and cylinders. Even the clutch disc has VW markings.

I rebuilt the original engine not painting the tins to keep it original.
New white walls, new brakes. Lenny Copp made the Texas Brown vert boot to protect the very fragile OG top and headliner. Otherwise I will be keeping the worn patina look.

Anyone have any OG True Red seat cover material with the sewn pleats. Would love to repair my drivers seat with original material.

I also need early floor mats and tunnel mat. The original were toast.

Hi, has anyone any experience of using a composite rear tack strip for the roof rather than original wood.

Thanks, Bill

This is a brilliant reference tool, is it a VW document that I can get a copy of from somewhere? Will help when I have to rebuild my cabriolet which is in paint at the moment.

Guys I used to be Skunpussy UK but lost my login details and have rejoined. My 58 Atlas Blue Cab is on the register some pages back now, quick update:

Body now off to paintshop for final panel alignment and paint (after ten years)

Now just checking that as much of the prepaint bodywork is correct so was wondering if you could help me by posting up pics of the underhood area so I can check the position of holes, cables, brackets in that area and up to the rear of the dash.

Also the car was dismantled when I got it so there are a few bits I am not sure about - can anyone help?

The interior dome light and switches - where are these positioned?

What was the colour code for the handbrake, shifter, seat frames etc (Silver Beige?)

Where is the best place to get my seals and rubbers from? is it chucks or WCM, or somewhere else? Keen to get the very best stuff I can as I build back up.

Thanks in advance!

Fantastic car type241.

It was discovered along with some other early VWs and a large parts stash near Vancouver, WA back in the mid 1990s. I was there the day the shop doors opened and it saw the light of day for first time since 1976. I helped move it from WA to a storage unit in Portland as the seller was selling his entire collection.

Your cabrio is as honest as they come. Last I heard it was still in the Portland area (few years back) and roadworthy.

Job well done in preserving it. I distinctly remember the cardboard trunk liner being factory white (grey hardboard as you'd see in a sedan, and what looked to be white body color paint applied from the factory), a detail I haven't' seen since in an original or restored car since.

So excited to finally own an early Vert! Purchased this 1960 Vert because it has super dry support rails and no other rust issues. Owned it for a wk and found original paint is buried under layer of brown primer. Currently in the process of getting it back to OG paint which is paprika red. This is how car started and where it’s at currently. Any feedback is appreciated!
