I have .040 clearance or more on every point the crank or rods come near the cam except this spot on the #1 #3 crank cheek, its only .028 here. This is probably the stiffest part of the crank, am I good to go or do I hit it with the disc and rebalance the assembly?

Yeah, you might get lucky, but you will also be changing the power characteristics of the engine. What type of crank is it?

I had a similar problem wen I had 5.7 rods and 90 stroke so I had my rods contoured smallkine to get my 50 clearance. It costed $40.00 contour and rebalanced.

Is the crank in its proper orientation, as it would be with final end play set? The gap might increase if you slide the crank to its final position and the tapered cam lobe moves away a bit. This still may not give you 0.040”.

Jason, normally that would be proceedure for me, but this one was balanced already from its first incarnation as a 2007.

This was a NOS made in USA Bugpack 78mm crank.

Maui its the crank web to cam nose not the rod on this one.

Neil yes to dots, no to end play, pushing crank against thrust surface helped some.

I took a finishing file and lightly went over the tight spot (it was coursely clearanced here from the original builder) taking the sharp corner off and have enough room now. didnt hardly remove any material, and being so close to the main journal I doubt the balance changed enough to notice

Looks like they ground the cam with big base circles. What kind of crank is that? Old bugpack?

you need to bevel just a little to gain clearance. don't go crazy though just a little.

Do all the fitting and mock assembly before getting all the parts balanced.

0.040" of about the thickness of a "zip" tie according to modok.

Good Luck.

This is how you build a good engine! Find a cam that doesn't do that.
