Last night while I was at work, my daughter texted and said, "Let's go see Star Wars tomorrow morning at 11am. We have to be there by 10am!" So, I got up at 8:30 and while waking up I decided to adjust wheel bearings...I mean why not, right?
Inner nut tightened to 29 ft-lbs. New lock plate slipped in place and then install the outer nut loosely. Inner nut loosened 72 degrees using a modified open end 27mm wrench. If you aren't sure, place the wrench on the nut. Rotate the brake drum to align a lug nut with the edge of the wrench. Loosen the nut to where the edge of the wrench lines up with the next lug nut at it's edge. That is 72 degrees.
Hold the inner nut at that point and using another 27mm wrench, tighten the outer nut. This not only locks the two nuts together, but also exerts additional pressure on the inner nut because of backlash and that neutralizes the bearing play.
If you don't have 27mm socket or wrenches, the SAE equivalent is 1 and 1/16th inches. I modified one of the wrenches by using a grinder to reduce the thickness of the open end portion. You have to do this because the nuts are very thin. It looks like this:
Last step is to lock the lock plate to the nuts. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Flyboy, your progress is amazing and I have some serious tooling and OCD envy. Thank you so much for documenting all of this work, the king pin replacement is on my todo list and your post is super helpful. I can't wait to see this one finished too.
Cheers!

Any time the link pins are changed or adjusted, you have to check toe-in.
First you need long straight edges roughly the length of the diameter of the tire
I clamped them to the drums. 24” diameter tires means 12” forward of the hub and 12” aft.
Next, put the pitman arm perpendicular to the axle tubes
Loosen the two clamp bolts on the tie rod
Take measurements front and rear from one straight edge to the other. It’s important not to pull on the tape measure as that might bend the straight edge and affect your measurements. My initial measurement was 1/4” toe out.
It’s important as well to be consistent with measurements. In other words I measured outer edge front and rear.
Turn the long tie rod one way to make it longer, the opposite way to make it shorter. I needed to go longer. What your shooting for is between 3/64” but no more than 1/8”. The limit is .04”-.12”
Front
Rear
I ended at a little less than 5/64” which is .078”
Tighten the clamp bolts on the tie rod and you’re done. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

And the pan is a wrap! Today I cotter keyed the tie rods, torqued and cotter Keyed the rear axle nuts and reinstalled the tires. Also, topped off the steering gear and rolled the pan outside.
Time to roll the body in the skunkworks again
About time
Pan is tucked under for storage
And time for some battle damage assessments
That’s gonna need some lovin’
And this
Believe me, it looks worse in person
So started stripping the wiring out of the front
I guess this is for when you just don’t have a fuse _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Driver's side front quarter panel at the front apron did not escape the carnage. It's not terrible but rough. And the repairs they did...well, let's just say they didn't straighten much they just relied on a torch to fill in the blanks.
At first glance it looks okay, as your attention is drawn to the passenger side and all its appearance of cellulite on Walmart thighs.
They replaced the front apron, but it does not appear they did much to straighten anything that is "hidden". Theres a fair amount of stretched metal under that fender as well as some nasty little crinkles.
The flash reveals the welding slag they left behind. I didn't get a front shot of this prior to my initial straightening work this morning, but from the front edge of that apron back to the large knife pressing, about 3" back, the whole panel was angled outward about 1/2". The fender nut was also angled downwards and forwards. That's the one that lives between the headlight bucket and the quarter panel.
I'm not done with this one just yet, but these are two after pictures. It is much straighter now and the fender nut is pointing in the correct direction.
That's now straight back to the first pressing and netted about more 1/4" distance from the steering gear access hole.
This was about 15 minutes of fender and dolly work, and nothing compared to the passenger side. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Day 3: Today I started forming the original pressed areas in. Using the drivers side as a template...
Driver’s side. I made some firming tools out wood to capture some of the angles involved.
A little easier to see them here.
The spare tire well curve
2.5 hours later...
I’ve shot the inside and outside with tan paint.
Followed by black paint. I’ll sand tomorrow and hit the high spots with hammer and dolly. Then repeat, again and again until I’ve got it as smooth as I can. I want to save as much original metal as possible. I’ve also gained 1/4” of length on the passenger side.
Lower front fender mount to lower rear fender mount bolt measures 44” per service manual. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Day 7: yesterday I picked up a hammer and dolly kit and I started today doing some hammering which quickly turned into cutting. Once I crawled underneath the front end an idea reared its ugly head...it said, "Hey, if you have a new spare tire well coming, why don't you cut the old one out?" So, I did.
Easy enough.
But then upon closer inspection, there's some ugly rust lurking and a lot of holes where they attempted to re-weld the bumper mount to the lower passenger quarter. So, I cut off the bumper mount.
And so, I did some serious soul searching...I've decided to order a front panel.
Cut off the front apron seemed to be in order
Oh yeah, that's ugly
And the driver's side is only a little better. So, while I'm waiting on both front panels to arrive (won't be able to order until 28 December) I'll move on to other stuff, though the lower spare tire well will be here Wednesday. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-
