Hello, Samba-ers. The wire between the handle and latch on the fuel door of my '71 Ghia just snapped. Is there some simple way to still open the fuel door so that I can fill my car with gas? I've looked at how the latch mechanism is set up, and I have to admit a simple solution has eluded me. Thus I turn to the experts.
Is there some basic trick, I hope? Or is this about to eat up a sunny afternoon? Or more?
Thanks,

To replace the cable you'll need to have the fuel door open to unscrew the latch end of the assembly. If your cable broke and the door is closed there are two (10mm iirc) bolts in the passenger fender well that hold the hinge of the fuel door to the body. Remove the bolts, lift the fuel door off.
Replacing the cable is straightforward and a bit of a pain. |

Aaaaaaahhh. So THAT'S it! Stared at the mechanism from under the fender, but it didn't dawn on me that the bolts for the door were accessible. Will give it a shot in the morning. Many thanks. |
