This may answer one of your questions...

You think a Rabbit Diesel engine would fit in there?

Depend on whether you stacked them horizontally or verically. Either 6 or 8. Lots of room!

Following this thread makes me re- think my plans to restore and repaint my 56 SC pickup. This is an early November 1955 Wolfsburg pickup. with original paint. The license plates on it are 1961. In hindsight, I sure wish I'd bought it back in 1984 when I first saw it instead of in 2000 after it sat ouside in Iowa weather for 16 more years!
There are some bad rust spots, but I was wondering if I could buy Dove Blue paint that would be a close enough match that it didn't look patched?
There's one picture of this pickup in the gallery. I'll edit later and make a link.
Near term plans are to put a foul air 40hp in it. It'll look fairly stock and be a bit easier and more reliable. than a 36 (which has been long gone, maybe since 1961!)

Ha Ha Ha Ha, I think I'm close to a tri-fecta on that one.

The nose at least looks pretty surface rusty. I saw an original paint Bus where someone just repainted the nose recently, it was totally obvious.

Does anybody have any wheels available in the right date range: October 1955? They also are long gone.

I need some 10-55 wheels for my '56 Westfalia....I'm not looking for the crows feet version and will accept either riveted or welded rims.
