Turned out a valve adjustment screw broke!!!
Better it happened in the garage rather than in the dark in pouring rain on the side of the road. |

It's a cool bus, a 67 of course. And Roger has mad shopping skills. |

Dang! With the amount of miles you two put on the Crager bus annually, what's the odds of it breaking in the driveway? Well, i guess thats something else I might add to my road kit! |

Nice photo with the Golden Gate in the background Clara.
You have left the vent scoops on, does it help or hurt?

It is all about the style.
They on were pm the bus when found,
with the cut wheel wells with flares,
and the big wide Cragars.
I removed the welded on Nerf bars, and added the custom rear bumper with extra lights
Honestly, I bought this bus Jan 1st 2008, to be a shed, and did not expect to have it ten years later. It is just really useful to have a big hatch kombi Westfakia combination stuff hauler/ camper.
We have put just over 75,000 miles on it, mostly since fall 2009 when the blue westy went to the East Coast.
One day it will be a stock looking velvet green kombi, but that seems to be fairly low on the fixit list. The bus could stand some rocker repair, and the wheel arches will get fixed then. I bought a 70 bus as my replacement work truck, but have not got it daily driver status yet.
(I did check scoop cooling once, on another bus. It seems that adding scoops did more to cool the engine. IIRC, it brought head temps down by ~10C) (FWIW, I don't seem to have problems with overheating, and would not add them to a bus. But they go with the look of this kombi) |

Refitted my speedo. Just back from a refurb by Thorsten at Kratuclassicparts.
I had the patina look (no cosmetic work, because the dial was fine before) and the odometer digits repainted. I can finally tell how far I haven't driven it.
New needle because the old one broke.
Apologies for the grainy photo. It's dark in the garage and I turned the flash off to cut down the reflection...
I'd love to find the guy at VW who thought it would be a good idea to have four blue or blue-with tracer wires converge at the speedo. Sorting out which was which was fun _________________ Andy

I've been slowly working on my '57 deluxe; the current project is getting the engine compartment squared away. Yesterday I tacked in the engine lid prop bracket, and tested with an NOS prop rod that I've had in my stash for 20+ years - turns out it's a barndoor piece and won't fit.

I started putting some parts up in the loft of our new garage/shop. A fair amount of stuff still needs to be moved. All the heavy and bulky stuff will be transferred over to pallet racking I've yet to purchase. It will live on the other side of the shop.

I know they say "pictures or it didn't happen," but it did.
Broke the clutch cable on my double cab a weekend ago and ground gears all the way home (a few miles). Decided to rebuild/refurbish the clutch pedal as well as the accelerator pedal assemblies, which - wow - needed it. Cleaned, media-blasted, and painted everything, except for the clutch pivot portion and bushings, which I smoothed with crocus cloth and greased. Welded the clutch lever hole (to which the cable attaches) and re-drilled for a nice, sturdy and oh so perfect ID.
On the accelerator lever, I did pretty much the same and made sure it was mounted correctly and bushed, where necessary to make sure everything was tight, but not restrictive. Attached both cables and adjusted accordingly.
Holy schnikes! In 20 years, I don't think I've ever had such a smooth (and quiet) clutch or a consistent accelerator! Didn't take much time at all and made a world of difference. Cut out the media-blasting I did and you could have it done in a matter of hours, bearing the rate of paint drying... _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

Absolutely! I'm over 50 now and made myself a promise that I will never again work on cars on the ground if at all possible. The height of the garage was dictated by the fact I wanted to be able to put a bus or high top vehicle up on a lift.
I just have to let the money tree grow a bit more. The lift will go on that side of the shop. The area under the loft is for welding and machine tools. The open area I plan for a bus/car on a rotisserie. Again, long way to go. Benches, cabinets, racking. That tree needs to get busy |

I'll be 50 this year and can relate every time I get under my bus.
Where in the OC are you to get such a big lot? I'm in HB and its one of the few cities where you can still find big lots like this.
As for the money tree, mine is without leaves currently as I'm paying for two college kids. I'm just happy I have my Westy to enjoy. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |
