236 is for fuel injection, 249 is for auto trans, and then there are M codes for factory gas heaters and low compression/ special engines that I've seen stamped. In short, it seems that anything that affects how the turn-key engine is assembled with optional parts for certain applications *should* be an M code stamped on the fan housing, although I'm not entirely sure about earlier cars. The 1500 Club needs to step in here with more detailed info.
Now that I'm thinking about it, the info for low compression may actually be on the case itself rather than on the FH, at least in the cases of earlier cars. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Nothing on my beam...but there's writing all over the place on the car.
You can see the yellow paint on the beam and what appears to be "US" written just below the cowl drain holes
Just above the voltage regulator inside:
Right side behind the B pillar under rear fender:
Left side behind the B pillar under rear fender:
Left side air box:

this is not vw but its the most unusual markings I have seen thus far.
and I believe this one was factory from what I can tell.

IO is German for in Ordnung, meaning "OK" or "passed". Might've been stenciled onto the completed engine after its dyno startup and break-in run, showing that it achieved minimum power ratings and is acceptable for installation.
EA363- got me there. EA is the usual abbreviation for Entwicklungs Auftrag, meaning development contract. That designation was usually reserved for large projects such as the entire car (first gen Rabbit/Golf was EA337).
TMG- really got me. Triebwerk mit Getriebe? (powerplant with transmission)? Like a setup with the engine for a stationary generator or with a power take-off? |

It appears on white cars they used blue grease pencil. Someone at the factory thought my inner right rear fender/airbox was "OK" |
