Here's some random pics of my junk |
You have some really nice vintage cars there.
I just put this one together. I got the body with a lot of toys I bought, and after cleaning it up and adding a few decals I mounted it on a vintage slot chassis.
The lexan body was badly warped, so I used the interior from an old VW toy to not only add detail, but to give the body some shape. The car is a display piece only, but was built in a way that it could be made to run without much trouble. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

A Strombecker Thing is 1/28 scale. The mexican copy of this model (made by Impala or ALSI) is a bit smaller, more or less scale 1/29.
Another plastic model is the HSV vacu modelkit, scale 1/35.
images of these can be found on this page:

The reason I mentioned Strombecker is that although it's slightly larger, the length is somewhat abbreviated and it should fit a 1/32 chassis okay. But you're more a specialist on Thing toys than I am. |
Your strombecker idea was not that bad: easily available and quiet close to a scale 1/32. _________________ Thing stuff:

That's a "Lancer" body. They almost all seem to have warped over time. The rear kind of twists over to the left. I have found a few that haven't warped.
Here's a NOS Lancer, then a NOS Dubro in the middle, and some weird 914 on the left. I can't remember who made the 1/32 Bug in the front. It might have been Dubro also.
I finally found my Holy Grail of slot cars a couple months ago. it's an "International" 1/24 lexan Bus body. I didn't think I would ever find one. The article at the bottom was really the only place I had even seen it.
I'm going to build a new chassis for it with all NOS Dynamic parts soon. I've got a stupid amount of vintage slot car parts... |

I'll have to add the International bus to my want list because I dabble in collecting slotcars and that sucker is cool!
I have an unused Dubro body in lavender and a couple of cars based on the Lancer including the red one above. Both are from the 1960s. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

It just dawned on me. After squinting and looking a little closer, the bus is a copy of the Gay Camper! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Wow, can't believe I didn't see this topic before!
For me, slot cars cars came into my life circa 1965, a few years before VWs, but still love them both.
The oldest in the collection was built ~1998 using an old Dubro body then scratchbuilt a drag racing chassis for it. At that time there were several scale 1/4 miles tracks in Southern California.

That's one of the most attractive VW slot cars ever. A great reminder of how nice the Dubros was/is. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

As long as we're back on the topic of slot cars, here's my latest creation. (Excuse the dusty keyboard.)
This one started out as an Aurora Speedline car, which was an HO slot car body on a diecast roller frame. What's neat about these is they came in colors the slot car versions were never molded in. This is a pastel orange one.
I cut the diecast bumpers off the chassis and mounted them in place of plastic ones. They look just like them, and add a little weight to help the car stick to the track. I also added some decals, and AJ's rear tires. I was happy with the results. Simple and clean, with a slight nose-down attitude.

So, with these Speedline cars, was Aurora responding to the Hot Wheels craze?
Pretty cool conversion. A little added weight can be helpful to overall handling.
When racing neck and neck it comes down to stay on and make laps!
For home and smaller commercial tracks is this neat Porsche Speedster ready to run in 1/32 scale made by Ninco...

Aurora made the Thunderjet 500, which was the most popular HO slot car of the 1960s (left). They also put the plastic slot car
body on a free-rolling diecast chassis, called Speedlines (right). These were intended to capitalize on the Hot Wheels craze.
The bodies for the rollers came in colors that the slot cars didn't come in (including the plated example shown in the photo),
and make very nice slot car conversions.
These bodies were thin and fragile, and were easily cracked or damaged. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Christmas time & slot cars go together for me. Ever since I was a little kid, I 've always wanted a fully scenic slot-car & train set layout. Now, years later I've realized this. The Porsche 550 is a model made by MEV with T-jet chassis. The 904 is Aurora and two 911s by Bauer. More images in my gallery. Happy New Year. |

Yep. Just one tho'. I found this 911, body only, then mounted it to a T-jet chassis and put on some AFX wheels as the T-Jet wheels just didn't match the scale of the body.
Model railroad scenery supplies work great. |

That's a wonderful T-Jet conversion. I'd love to run some laps on that track.

Stumbled on this thread while looking for something else and thought I'd add my 2 cents. My only slot car, an HO scale by FALLER Germany. I was told with the decal on door it's pretty rare.
