Tonka bug detail that I found

Hi Volktales. Great looking restoration you have. I just saw your topic with the picture of your restauration. (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=594395).

I just finish my first custom one. I paint it lotus white like my 67 beetle will look like. I did some modification to it: shorten front beam and drop at the front, VW wheels with wide tire and open side windows. I really like to play with this one.

About your green beetle, it look like that It came from the mighty car carrier. I also fund one example like yours but I never came from a look book or picture of an original example.

I saw the one with the 5 spoke wheels on the car carrier frequently but not alot with the VW wheels.

If you want to know if it came fron the car carrier or not, look at the top of the car. They are generally full of scratch because of the back loader.

So, continue your great work and post some picture of your complete tonka collection.

Here some update again:

I just saw some difference about the canadian version of the tonka beetle.

They use to make some with the decklid without the license plate light and without the hole behind the license plate sticker:

Also, for those who want to restore there tonka, I fund a guy on ebay who reproduce the silver license plate sticker.
They are really close look reproduction. The only downside are that these are not paper sticker like originally but water transfer one. But, they look to be really good quality. Her are some picture of them:

On the left, original, right reproduction.

He use to reproduce only the tonka Minn. exemple but I send him some picture and he make me also the tonka USA and Tonka toronto exemple:

And all those for a really good price.

Good info there. A friend who knows I like Tonkas found this version for me...

Thought I never would get a reasonably priced yellow version. Are they that much rarer, or people just think they are and want more $???

I think the blue and red are probably the most common. The yellow doesn't turn up that often.

Since this thread is about the different Tonka variations, has anyone seen this one before? This example just sold on December 9 2016 on EBay for $540.00. I asked the seller if the Bug was plated or painted and he thought it was gold paint.

That's a great looking gold bug. I don't know if tonka made it, but they may have but there tonka license plate sticker if they do. But, the one who made it take is time to make it perfectly. They even split the body before paint it and rivet it back after (the four rivet are not painted). So its a great peice.

If any of you any of you have some tonka beetle, buggy or mighty car carrier for sale, let me know. I'll like to add some more to my collectlion. I could trade some other VW toy that I have for them. Let me know what you have and what you need.

Hi guys,

today a packet arrived with a curious Tonka. The beetle has chrome-plated hubcaps and trim rings around the headlights. According to the auction text it should be a Tonka the first version.

I searched the www for such a tonka, but I did not find it. Does anyone know this version and can confirm the auction text?

Hi Nicki,
Its an early Tonka with narrow tires, but its been customized somewhat. The chrome hub caps, headlights and bezel are not original, the headlight bezel looks like a cabinet washer from the hardware store. Otherwise it's in nice shape with both bumpers intact, nice (plastic) glass, and good paint. Usually these show quite a few scratches and wear from years of playtime.

Especially the TONKA VW being that old, there must be at least one ding in the paint somewhere . . .

Looks like being "customized somewhat" . . . . . and I think it also has been repainted as well . . . .

An easy way to tell if the paint is original is to check the baseplate. The chassis paint should be in the same condition as the body; if the body paint is perfect, the chassis paint should be just as nice, and this chassis appears to have some chips and rust spots, while the body looks perfect. This is a good indication of a repaint.

Plus, the chassis appears to have extra holes in the rear. This would indicate a later baseplate, such as one for a Plum Wild, which used a different rear axle mounting.

I also agree with Don that the extra parts appear to be common items from a hardware store.

Thanks for your explanations, Blue Baron. Obviously someone has done a lot of work. Normally, I do not buy models that are not in their original condition (whether new or used). But I only paid 25.51 euros for the Tonka. That does not hurt me that much.
