Sorry to hear of your losses, but glad to hear it wasn't worse. Best wishes for the new year and your future trips.

Be careful on Hwy 1. I managed to drop a wheel off the pavement causing my truck and camper to fishtail which caused the trailer to roll. Luckily i saved the camper and truck.

After 25 trips it finally got me.

Sorry dudes, the boat's already full! Plus I hear it's a terrible idea to take a Subaru south of the border. Laughing

How's the new tranny working out?

And joking aside, where ya startin' from? Wanna cross the border together? Is Beluga coming?

Just the hospitality we've come to expect from you guys Wink

The tranny is great! The price tag was a tough pill to swallow, but it was the right move for sure. Feels very good and drives smoother. Still wishing for taller gears later down the road, but this is good for the time being. What's the deal with yours? is it slipping, or just trying to head off future problems?

We are leaving NH Jan 17 in the Audi we picked up in CO. Headed back to CO to pick up the van again and sell the Audi and then make tracks toward the border. We'd love to cross with you guys. are you leaving with Corwyn from Potero Park?

Dogs in Baja are a big plus to us!

They can be alarms, serve as a common interest with locals, the Militar usually like them, and I have had the sniffer called off in secondary when they saw our dogs.

Have a blast! I miss Baja, it's been a couple of years now, Rolling Eyes

Roger that. Now that you say it, I remember reading that further up the thread.

Whafalia: Looks like some good times there! K2 (our malamute) will be coming with us for sure. We love having her around for the companionship, but also for some of the same reasons you just listed. Glad it's the same south of the border!

We've sorted insurance for the Baja trip. In the process, Mrs fxr asked me to check if one of the VIN characters was a letter D or the numeral 0 - the VIN as printed on the van's title was ambiguous. It was 0 - all good so far, but then we spotted another character was wrong. A '4' on the title was in fact a '9' on the van's VIN. Shit, shit, shit. The title, the US insurance and the registration were all incorrect! We've spent the last two hours printing forms to take to the CA DMV tomorrow to get the van VIN corrected on the title and the registration - the insurance was easy, just a phone call. Tried to get an appointment, but that was going to be too close to the departure date, so wait in line it shall be.

Bugger, bugger, bugger.

Glad to hear you love the new trans! We have a *barely* perceptible whine in third that I'm not totally convinced is new. I've decided not to road swap for the time being as that'd just introduce new variables just before the trip. I might change my mind tomorrow.

I must have missed the Golden Acorn, sounds cool and we'll see you all there! We'll be heading over from friends in San Diego. Any idea how long you guys (or anyone else) will be staying? Some friends will be in La Paz at the end of February, though the semi-recent travel advisory has me slightly concerned. We're gonna wing it for now...

TIPs Question:

Anyone know if a Westy requires a Mexican temporary import permit( TIP) as a motor home when crossing the border into Baja?

I notice the words Motor Home on My Westy's OR registration. Anyone else in the same situation?

Thanks,
Kimo

You do not need a TIP for Baja unless you plan to take the ferry from La Paz over to Topolobampo or Mazatlan and come back through mainland Mexico.
Be aware that things are changing and enforcement of various laws is different from crossing to crossing now.
For instance you cannot cross with a 3/4 ton or larger pickup with a removable camper in some places. It has to be permanent and registered as an RV. Some say its political , but who knows.
The fact that your rig is registered as a motorhome should be a help and not a hindrance as I understand things.

Just done our tourism cards (FMM) online - a bit of a phaff, but surely better than doing it all at the border. We'll be arriving at the Golden Acorn casino on Sunday afternoon - hopefully before dark, as the stop the night before will be in Tehachapi.

See you all then. Smile

When you come into the casino parking lot, I'm down to the left, next to a green Dodge pickup.

We crossed the border at Algodonas on Dec. 23 and drove hwy 5 south to Gonzaga Bay where we camped at Papa Fernandez's beach camp. Had it almost to ourselves. Dec 26 we did the detour to Chapala. Still 23 miles of rough road.

Got to Chapala, inflated the tires and headed south on Hwy 1 where we unfortunately rolled our Ruger Trailer, trashing our mt bikes, my ARB fridge, a Honda generator an much more. We decided to head back home to Salt Lake via Hwy 1 where we found it to have huge chuckholes all the way to El Rosario.

We'll try to return in January without the trailer and bikes.

Be careful on Hwy 1. I managed to drop a wheel off the pavement causing my truck and camper to fishtail which caused the trailer to roll. Luckily i saved the camper and truck.

After 25 trips it finally got me.

Rich

Glad to report that Rich was found happy as a clam on the beach at the end of a 17k dirt road.
You find the best people on the worst roads here in baja.

The rest of you better get down here before we catch all the fish.

We're probably the first of the group to return North - we only committed a couple of weeks to our first 'toe in the water', and turned back when the rain came.

A huge thank-you to Sam and the rest of the group who made the whole experience so much fun. Smile Yes, pictures will eventually be shown. Wink

Next year we'll be zipping down as far south as possible as soon as possible, and spending a lot more quality time down there.

It was great to have you along and I'm glad you had a good time!. My takeaway each year is more people realize that Baja California is safe and fun. I look forward to seeing you down next year - with or without me!

Back across the border with the last of my peeps! We started as nine vehicles and two of those stuck around until I came back. I'm alone at Motel 6 in Tucson waiting for my van to be repaired at European Auto Tech: as I pulled up to the customs booth in Mexicali, the coolant bleeding ring in the engine compartment blew - following the loss of the water pump/alternator belt. So, oil change, brakes, water pump, etc. I sincerely hope everyone had a good time in Baja California and would love to have you all back next year. Things are changing in Baja - some for the better, some not. The roads are improving and the gas prices have jumped. Still a great place to hide from winter for a while! Same time next year!

We just got back home the other day. Camped on lots of beaches, met Tobias Duncan, and Ransom and Casey who started the trip with you all. My in-laws flew into Loreto and we spent two weeks in the area including driving to Mulege,
Puerto Escondido, and San Javier. There are lots of great restaurants in Loreto.
On a whale watch trip we saw blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales, manta rays jumping, and a big school of dolphins.

Enjoyed lunch in San Filipe while the beach was wall to wall with people celebrating Semana Santa. Great cultural experience, including mariachi bands.

Camped at Rio Hardy about 60 km south of Mexicali. Crossed the border at Mexicali and then boondocked near Quartzite, Az. where it was 90 degrees.
Drove highway 89 up to Prescott at near 6000 ft. Too cold up there so we then headed back toward Lake Meade where we had a couple of great days camped right on the beach.

Then we spent a night in St George, Ut, and from there we drove over to Moab to meet up with my wifes cousins and do some mountain biking. Got home to Salt Lake on Sunday, just in time to get signed up for Syncro Solstice.

Saw lots of Vanagons in Baja this year, more than usual.
